Altar End is a well-liked cottage in Ambleside, praised for its excellent location and spaciousness. Guests appreciate its cleanliness, comfortable living spaces, and the convenience of on-site parking. The enclosed garden and proximity to local amenities are also highlights. Some guests noted areas for improvement, particularly in maintenance and comfort of furnishings.
The property generally receives positive remarks for cleanliness, with mentions of it being 'immaculately clean' upon arrival. However, some guests reported issues such as mould, cobwebs, and stained kitchen walls, which slightly lower the score.
The location is highly praised for being central, quiet, and within walking distance to shops, cafes, and the town centre. Its proximity to local attractions and the ease of exploring the Lake District contribute to a high score.
Guests find the living areas comfortable and the property spacious. However, there are several comments about uncomfortable beds and issues with furniture, which suggest room for improvement in this category.
The property is well-equipped with necessary appliances and a smart TV. Nonetheless, guests have reported maintenance issues such as problems with the fridge/freezer, oven, and heating, which affects the score.
There is insufficient information regarding any thoughtful gestures such as gifts or extra amenities provided by the hosts, so a score cannot be given in this category.
This interesting stone cottage was created from the Eastern section of St Anne’s Church. The church, an historically important building, was built in 1812. It is believed that a chapel occupied the site from the 1550s. This area of Ambleside will tempt you to explore its characterful lanes and original buildings which are steeped in history. Alternatively, you can head out on many peaceful, scenic walks through the spectacular Lakeland countryside from your doorstep. After you have parked in your private space, take a few moments to admire the stunning arched windows along the side of the property. Step through your front door straight into your modern, bright fitted kitchen which is well-equipped with a convenient dining table close by. The comforta-ble sitting room with feature fireplace invites you to spend time relaxing whilst listening to your fa-vourite music or thinking about your next day’s plans. Climb up the carpeted stairs directly from your dining area to discover your bedrooms. Appreciate the tasteful, traditional style furnishings as you enter your pleasant double bedroom, which features a gorgeous arched window through which you have dramatic views of Wansfell Pike. The twin bed-room and good-sized single (suitable for a child only) have lovely pine furniture. Don’t forget to sit out on warmer evenings on your private enclosed patio, where you are partially screened by trees when you eat alfresco at your picnic table. There's much fun to be had with your loved ones on an escape to Altar End.
Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, as was the large living room with board games and a large screen TV. The kitchen is compact but still had plenty of counter space for preparing meals. The dining area is quite small but still worked out well for our family. Having a dedicated, free parking space next to the property was a huge bonus along with the fenced-in space outside - which was great for sipping a coffee while sitting on the bench and giving our dog somewhere to play in-between our walks. Despite being just a short walk from the busy centre of Ambleside, this beautiful-looking old church has quite a tranquil setting. Weâve stayed at around half a dozen different properties in Ambleside over the years but Alter End is the one weâre most likely to return to. Weâve already recommended it to friends. Sykes Cottages were great to deal with. Everything from booking to arriving to leaving for home couldnât have gone more smoothly.

It was equipped with everything you could possibly need when staying away from home. Fantastic location and extremely convenient having access to a parking space. Would definitely recommend and hope to return in the future. Thank you!

Right in the heart of the town and an easy walk to the lake and surrounding areas. The enclosed garden was great to be able to let the dog out. Would definitely come back.
