What our customers say about their holidays

This listing does not live up to its description.
It is a cold, unwelcoming place where the heating is insufficient in every respect. Cold floors, draughty windows, a lack of insulation in this outbuilding lead to it having an unaired, abandoned feel and certainly not suitable for a winter break. It can be found up about a mile up the farm track, with a dark, dense wooded view from the kitchen and a view of the back of a farmhouse from the front. There is no name on the cottage which stands next to a delapidated greenhouse with sharp glass which has been allowed to cave in and stay where it fell. We left after 2 nights because the bed was so horribly and unbelievably cold. We left the heating on all day on our second day but the building retains no warmth at all. The minute the heating goes off, it becomes cold again. There is insufficient lighting in the lounge/diner for reading which is not cosy, even with a log fire. The owners had kitted out the kitchen well and left eggs as a welcome gesture which was nice but even the black , windowless bathroom was quite depressing. We did not contact the owners before we left as there is nothing they could have done to improve things for us. Sykes' representative's naïve comment that we should have talked to them first so that they could have turned up the thermostat showed a lack of understanding of the severity of our issues. We have both lived in a rural setting in the north of England and are used to inclement , winter weather. We have been Sykes customers for over 20 years and have always had a good experience. This means we will not be booking our next holiday with Sykes.

First Impressions of the cottage where quite positive, it is an old stone Building which remains cool even on a warm day.
The heating to the property is controlled by a timer which in turn is controlled by the owner, hence at night on our stay in mid September it got fairly cold. There was also a fume smell emitting from the oil boiler in the en-suite double bedroom, especially if the door to the en-suite bathroom left closed. Hence due to there only being two of us we opted to sleep in another of the 3 bedrooms, the lack of heating control at night was a slight downside to our stay though. Privacy was another problem at the cottage as it is part of a multi unit letting set up, with a number of permanent residents also. This meant the need to the keep curtains drawn, or residents can see straight into the holiday let, access to property was via two Drives each very pot holed even for a 4x4 to use. There was also a distinct lack of where to go leaflets for things to see and do in the area, on leaving we left our leaflets there for new guests to use when they arrive. Seating in kitchen looked period but was very uncomfortable and all the chairs rickety, with very loose wooden Joints with some previous attempted screw repairs quite dangerous really. These need repairing properly to safe guard future occupants safety when using the focal point kitchen, as this is a premium property it really needs all the little details re- addressing especially the boiler when the rental season finally quietens down. The property could be brought right back up to scratch, over the course of a couple of days re-investment and time. Overall we enjoyed our time there but it could have been so much better.

What a stunning place!
Stayed here for a week in September 2021, this had been postponed from March 2021 due to the pandemic! Trip up from Glasgow was lovely and very scenic, but please note this is a secluded house, which was what we wanted, roads are fine until the last wee bit which is a dirt track through a farm. The farmer is so nice and friendly too. Anyway, the house has everything, comfort, luxury, views, peace and quiet and an abundance of wildlife. We were a family of 5 adults plus a dog and you can definitely have your own space in this property. The walks are lovely round the property. The kitchen and main living space were my favorite and it is a lovely place to be sitting watching the pheasants and red kites go by with your morning coffee. One thing to remember is a torch as it is very dark there at night. The cleanliness of the house was exceptional, the handbook and instructions for all the appliances was incredible too, they have thought of everything, We also had to make an emergency visit to the vet whilst staying here and guess what they have thought of this too and gave several vets numbers in the information pack, Fantastic. The laundry/boiler room has all the equipment you need and more. If you do visit this property, be sure to visit The Drovers for a meal (dog friendly in the bar) and the Redwings Mountains Sanctuary (also dog friendly) close by. Two lovely places to spend your time. Will hopefully be back again in the near future.

Glen Cruick is quite possibly the most perfect holiday cottage we've ever stayed at.
It's a real home away from home. THANK YOU! The photos are accurate, it actually is that beautiful. The house is immaculate and well catered. The number of walks from the door kept us busy all week, the dogs loved it! I'd love to visit again in the spring or summer...or both! If you're thinking about booking, let me tell you why you should: 1. Great for dogs - spacious fully enclosed garden and a myriad of fantastic walks from the doorstep. 2. Secluded - happily had a cuppa in my dressing gown outside in the morning. 3. Laundry facilities - are brilliant and everything dries in super quick time in the boiler room. I could have packed much lighter! 4. WiFi - decent WiFi for where it is, no bother using Netflix and BBC iPlayer on the TV. Though there is an extensive DVD collection too. 5. Remote but accessible - only a short drive to the A90 making it easy to get to shops and local attractions, but far enough in to the country to feel cut off from the world (in a good way!) 6. Hosts - info provided before the trip was exceptional. Directions to the property are spot on and easy to follow. Book today - you will not be disappointed!
