What our customers say about their holidays

  • Maria - Verified booking

We had a lovely week in Cornwall and the property provided us with a great base for our stay - it’s a fantastic location, walking distance to beaches.

It has everything you need. The garden is lovely and there’s loads of space at the property which is brilliant for family stays. However we found that the cottage was not particularly clean, for example drawers and shelves in the kitchen had bits of dirt in/on them and I was a bit horrified to find an actual mussel in one drawer which was not us as we had not cooked any mussels! The cutlery drawer front is broken - as it was last year (we stayed in the cottage last year as well) we mentioned this in our feedback last year but nothing had been done to fix this and it was difficult to open the drawer which needed to be accessed regularly. In the end we had to put the cutlery tray up on the work surface which is when I discovered the mussel underneath it. Drawers in the other bedrooms were also not very clean. The freezer was not very clean. As we mentioned in our feedback last time the cottage is great and has all the facilities you need but some things are just a bit dated and don’t function as well for example the showers. Also the spin cycle on the washing machine did not always work. My friend was staying at a John bray place in the Highcliffe estate Pengelly and I was a little surprised to discover that he paid only £60 more than I did; Pengelly is a vastly more modern and clean property. I feel that the dated facilities and lack of cleanliness could be reflected more in the price of the property which is expensive. I appreciate that sheets and towels are provided at the cottage which is great. Having said all this, we had a lovely stay at the cottage, it has everything you need and we really like the space and privacy you get (which you don’t get as much of at Highcliffe). We did have a lovely week there.

The actual property itself was good, very sweet.

What let it down was the cleanliness. We are aware it’s a dog friendly property which our dog came down for the second half of the holiday. What you don’t expect is to sit on the floor with our baby to realise the rugs and sofas were thick with dog hair. The property was dusty with cobwebs all down the backs of the bedroom units. There were hairs in the Bath, sink and the shower. What made it worse is that the owner came to see us, realised we had a dog (it was a last minute thing my parent in laws came down for the second half) and proceeded to tell us we needed to pay £30 charge. I explained how we had to get the hoover out as it wasn’t cleaned before, to be told not worry on the charge as their hoover broke while cleaning before we arrived. To then get a call when we were back to say we didn’t leave it in an adequate state. Even though we washed and put every piece of cutlery away, stripped the beds like we were asked to (which when paying for them to clean it I don’t see why we should have to) and folded all the duvets up neatly. So would I recommend this place? No is the short answer, and if you do make sure you take photos of how you leave it as we felt she was very sneaky and actually embarrassed we told her how bad it was. The lady also baked us a cake for arrival and the irony is the joke of the holiday was it was a nice touch but would of been better to have a clean property!!

We have been coming to Cornwall for nearly 50 years, and we have stayed in countless John Bray properties in Trebetherick.

This is the first property that we have been disappointed with. Whilst the location was superb and the garden views lovely, the bungalow itself was very dated and lacks what you would expect in a rental property in 2023. The kitchen facilities were basic, small fridge, mismatched crockery and cutlery - it desperately needed updating and felt quite unloved. The bathroom off the breakfast room was equally dated and the shower didn't work - only producing a trickle of water on full power, so was unusable. The second bathroom was also very dated, and the shower was passable (just). The two T.V.'s had the basic channels, but surely SMART T.V's should be expected now - not that we spent much time watching T.V. but our two teenagers were quite disappointed. The general cleanliness was inadequate with lots of cobwebs and a previous tenants' underwear left in a drawer for us to find! We love coming to Trebetherick, and don't like writing negative feedback, but this property is in much need of attention, care and some modernisation. The location is so perfect, it seems a shame that this property wasn't more comfortable and welcoming. Having stayed in Pengelly last year, the comparison is stark.

Upstairs in the cottage was lovely, though downstairs the living room was very small, photos on website do not show the dining table also in the lounge, and a large un-needed coffee table taking up all the room!

!! No drainer to dry pots on if you wanted to handwash. Plus side, lovely garden, outside tap, Badge Inn across the road was lovely, and great train access to St Ives. Cleanliness - sofas were covered in dog hairs, and absolutely stank of wet dog. I hoovered them after we arrived and left the rugs covering them in the corner all week which made it a bit better. Leaflets in the basket were years old, the window in the kitchen was so dirty on the inside you could right your name in it, Whilst checking around when we were leaving, under the sofa was also full of 'tumbleweed doghairs', and 3 draws upstairs were full of someone else's clothes from a previous visitor!!! Not great housekeeping standards, I appreciate it was dog friendly, but not everyone has dogs and surely it should be cleaned properly and deeply after customers!! Its not difficult to hoover under a sofa as opposed to round it. Would not recommend the cottage because of this, and we noticed there are other comments in the visitor book regarding same issues.

We loved Pippin, it is a beautiful little cottage in an amazing location.

So close (but not so it effects the peace of the cottage) to the train shuttle back and forth to St Ives & the bus route - we only used our car once during our week stay. There are great facilities & it is clear that the owners have thought long & hard about what is needed for a comfortable stay. It was lovely having the little well tended garden. Lelant is a great village and Porthkidney Sands just a short walk away is breathtaking! The bathroom was fantastic, the underfloor heating was a real bonus to keep it dry. We were disappointed that there wasn’t any recycling facilities, we even walked up to Tesco at Carbis Bay with our plastic, cardboard & glass but there wasn’t anything there either. A footstool would be idea in the lounge just for that extra bit of comfort! Some confusion about check-in & out times, the listing differs from the email received and the guest books differs again. 3pm check in and 10am check out would be ideal as 5.30pm & 9.30am takes a whole day of your holiday away.

If you can't get enough of beach life then Cornwall will have you coming back year after year. If surfing's your thing, then you can't beach this beautiful corner of England, where the waves can get pretty epic! Newquay is the epicentre of surf culture in the UK, and so is very lively and vibrant all through the year, with surf shops, restaurants, and bars aplenty.

As well as its more bustling parts, Cornwall has some truly breathtaking and remote strips of sand too, where you can escape the usual holiday crowds. Kynance Cove, located near to Lizard point, will amaze you with its natural beauty and is the perfect spot for a photograph. Unlike other more touristy parts of the region, Kynance Cove is pretty wild and remote, characterised by pristine white sands, serpentine rock formations, and clear azure water – a definite must-visit if you're looking to get away from it all.

There are a vast number of amazing beaches in Cornwall, each with their own distinct character, from idyllic strips of sand to bustling surf spots like Fistral Beach. There's no better way to experience these incredible locations than by choosing Cornwall cottages near the beach, perfect for romantic getaways, unforgettable family trips or seriously fun surfing holidays!
