What our customers say about their holidays

  • Jim - Verified booking

Starting positively, the cottage was lovely, a little quirky which we liked but everything we kind of expected from a typical seaside cottage.

It was clean, the beds were comfy and everything we needed was supplied. Location is perfect and the fact that you get a parking space was a bonus. We arrived on the Saturday in torrential rain but on Sunday morning the weather had improved so we could go and have breakfast on the decking, it was lovely. I had received a phone call on the Friday telling me about the scaffolding next door and they were hoping it would be taken down during the week, I said as long as it doesn’t spoil the view then it’s not a problem, it most certainly did but as it turned out it would be the last time we used it. The sun comes over lovely in the morning, perfect for breakfast alfresco unless you’ve got builders within 10 feet of you banging and drilling from 8.30. We felt confined in our property looking out at the nice weather rather than being able to make the most of it. There were a couple of times after that we could have used it as the builders weren’t there, unfortunately the reason they weren’t there was because it was absolutely chucking it down with rain. We feel disappointed that we weren’t informed earlier about this when we booked and the impact it would have. The scaffolding is going to be up for a good few weeks looking at how the work is going so people need to be told beforehand that the decking will potentially be out of bounds during the day unless you like sharing your tea and toast or afternoon tea with a couple or so workmen! My son was in the attic room and was woken up most mornings by the noise which he wasn’t happy about (he is 18 and isn’t happy about a lot of things to be fair!!). I visited your office to mention our concern and report the fact that the carbon monoxide detector went off at 4am, it seems this probably should have been swapped in the last few years for a new one as it hadn’t been changed since being fitted in 2013. We were told maintenance would come out that day to fit new batteries, by 4.45 no one had been so my wife popped back to the office to inform them, they were literally just closing the door. Obviously carbon monoxide is the secret killer so felt more comfortable with a working alarm and eventually a man turned up to put new batteries in and confirm my view that indeed it did need a new one fitted which he did the following day. As I said at the office, I don’t honestly know what you can do about the building work and the scaffolding but it does have a massive impact on peoples holiday stopping at April Cottage which is a shame as everything else was great. I would be interested to hear if anyone else shares our views whilst staying there in the last few weeks or coming weeks.

We loved the cottage, the decor, the facilities: that big bath downstairs, good kitchen, shower, telly, garden, fairly close to the sea, well insulated, but having extra heaters, the whole feel of the place!

A couple of little niggles: the washing machine smelled of fungi - I did a hot wash in it after, so hopefully sorted, might need a wash with some vinegary water. The drying machine came in handy after a rainy day! What is nothing to do with the cottage: narrow roads, often single, so a bit stressful driving, but mostly ok, but drivers to be aware. Would be useful to have some more information about: local shops, how to turn on the hot water for the bath (that it needs about an hour, otherwise switch in cupboard by washing machine), we figured out everything else. Tv worked well, and loved the safe and big garden (needs mulching and feeding with organic matter in the autumn, but lovely). Extra bonus to have a freezer as well (we left a frozen chips behind for somebody :D), and left a couple of blue, white and gold plates (they are old, but hope could be used in the decorations). Didn't dare to touch the nice Willeroy Bochs ones, but loved looking at them, the others were great to use and pretty, the whole place has a lovely atmosphere. We were very lucky to have had it for a better price, apart from the long journey from the Midlands, would love to be back someday. Also a great base for visiting several lovely places around. Thank you!!!

We very much enjoyed our stay at the cottage which is situated in a lovely part of Cornwall near to coastal walks with stunning views and in a lovely rural location.

The cottage is very tastefully decorated and the garden too very well tended. There are just a few things we would like to highlight to make better: the bed linen was too warm and a second set of linen for week 2 would have been appreciated. The fridge was much too small, the garden table was nice but some more comfortable garden furniture/deck chairs/sun loungers would be good. We felt some information about what was around would have been useful. For instance The Five Pilchards pub in Porthallow is just a 10 minute walk there (longer coming back up the steep hill!) with great food and a great pub, nearby beaches and walks to take. St Keverne had just one pub not 2 and was also a great place to visit. We of course did our research of places to visit but just a few suggestions from the owners would have been nice. I have to say we were very happy there and some day would love to go back (hoping we get as good weather as this year!)

    The cottage location is fab.

You get what you pay for and the pictures are not misleading however the decor and furniture need updating. Kitchen well equipped however not a lot of cupboard space for grocery, massive wine rack on the wall could be better utilised. Living room, carpet and furniture old and on last legs, TV system is all wrong, the tv that is there needs to be upgraded to a SMART TV. Smell of damp downstairs was overpowering however read previous comments and we brought an electric air freshener which helped massively as all the plug ins were empty of any perfumes. Hallway again first impressions carpet and walls need an overhaul. Bedroom main no issues there Bathroom ok Didn’t use the top floor as only two of us. Decking no issues. We had the dehumidifier on and must have emptied twice a day helped with the damp smell. Overall it served the purpose for us however it is tiered and requires investment.

    Lovely cottage and well equipped.

Lovely outdoor space in the evening to enjoy a glass of wine. Addressing the strong mould smell that others mentioned - we live in an old cottage and there are always issues. This is an old property, and there really needs to be a bit of an allowance for that. We found that opening/running the fan in the kitchen window and running the dehumidifier, worked wonders. The bed in the main bedroom was super comfortable (there were only two of us, so we didn't need the 3rd floor bedroom). Bedding was lovely and soft. Towels were fluffy and thick. Cottage could have been slightly cleaner, but we've been in worse. The hoover was completely full when we went to hoover on our penultimate day. We emptied it but there was minimal suction. Possibly could just be the filters needing a clean. Overall, a lovely cottage. It's an old cottage - it's lovely for what it is. We would go back.
