  What a beautifully organised cottage, there was absolutely nothing that we wanted and couldn’t find. We loved the flowers and basket of goodies to welcome us, and especially the view out of the kitchen window and the flowers in the pots (watered too!) – we could go on! Visited Alnwick Castle and Garden for Harry Potter Experience, beautiful gardens (children need to take a change of clothes as they will get wet!), Holy Island of Lindisfarne and watched the tide cross the causeway, Farne Islands with Billy Shields Boat Trips to see the amazing colonies of birds – fortunately the puffins were still there. Embleton Beach was the best. Lots of castles. A little further afield, Hadrian’s Wall the the Kielder Observatory for a 2 hour children’s session on how to launch a rocket! And last but not least, Edinburgh Tattoo as one of the family will probably not come this way again. Loved the Cheviot Hills and Border Country. So we are steeped in history and have thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Recommend the butchers in Bamburgh and the Smokery in Craster. Thank you.

  Wow – what a place! The cottage is wonderful. This was our first little holiday away with our 6 month old son and this cottage couldn’t have been better. Set up SO well for families. Little touches like the box of toys is so thoughtful. The quality of the renovation is spectacular, the finish wonderful. sitting in the gorgeous kitchen, looking out at that great view is simply wonderful. So much thought has clearly gone into preparing this cottage – it is so well equipped, you seem to have thought of everything (especially in the kitchen). This is our first visit to Northumberland, an area we simply love, but this cottage is definitely the best we’ve stayed in. We are just sad we weren’t able to stay longer. Thanks, we hope to visit again.

  The lodge itself was amazing and can't fault the cleanliness and everything within the lodge.

  The estate it was on was a little remote and it was a shame the pub wasn't open at all for the whole weekend. I'm guessing this is seasonal. One element that did spoil our weekend was the lodge behind us. It was occupied by 3 ladies who felt it was appropriate at 6am on a Saturday morning to be shouting at each other whilst drinking Stella and letting their dogs run riot around the front of the lodge, this continued for the majority of the morning and the same again on the Sunday, albeit a little less drunk!!! There were others who did not obey the reduced noise levels past 11pm, which was a little annoying!! We will he visiting the area again but will he looking at alternative accommodation, which is a shame.

  A wonderful long weekend in Northumberland as part of a longer trip around the UK. The Shiel proved to be a beautiful base from which to visit the area, and we all had so much fun. A boat trip to the Farne Islands on Saturday was wonderful – even though we received a biblical drenching when the heavens opened. Sunday was spent on the beautiful beach at Low Newton, the sun breaking through in the afternoon and a wonderful end to the day at The Ship Inn. Highly recommended. As we head off now for the Lake District, our only regret is that we did not plan to stay in Northumberland longer, and spend a few extra days at the wonderful Shiel. Jon and Ruth, you have a special and rare place here!

  On arrival at the gate and taking in the wonderful views and then the aspect of the cottage and garden, we knew we had made an excellent choice. Once inside we were stunned by the style of the interior and have continued to be wholly impressed by the comfort and attention to detail. Thank you for the most welcome ‘welcome pack’. The last mile from the white cottage was a long one and it was great to be able to sit down with a cuppa and unwind. We have continued to enjoy the wonderful location of coast and country. The weather has been very kind and we have had a beautifully relaxing week. I gave the outdoor pots a good drink on Friday – they deserve if for being part of the lovely view.
