Dungeness Nature Reserve is a particularly unique landscape - desolate and sweeping yet home to a wide array of flora and fauna. Just a 15-minute drive from the park, it’s well worth spending an afternoon walking, birdwatching and picnicking at this lovely spot. For those craving a spot of culture, the town of Rye is just four miles away. Wander the charming cobbled lanes, admiring the ancient timber-framed houses and quaint shops and cafes as you go by. If you fancy a drink, then head to the atmospheric Mermaid Inn, whose cellars date back to 1156. Here you can enjoy a refreshing pint in the very same room where smugglers used to meet. The pub even comes complete with its own secret passages for quick getaways. If you’re after even more history, then Bodiam Castle is just a 30-minute drive away. Run by the National Trust, this 14th-century moated castle is a romantic spot indeed and its majestic ruins dominates the skyline for miles around.
