Guests say

Postbox Cottage in Ashbourne is highly praised for its immaculate condition, beautiful and quiet location, and cosy comfort. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, lovely bathroom, and the thoughtful welcome packs provided by the host, Jane. While there were minor concerns about maintenance and space, these were addressed promptly, and the overall experience is reflected in the glowing recommendations and intentions to return.

The cottage receives exceptional remarks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews highlighting its spotless condition. One mention of a mouldy smell was countered by subsequent reviews, ensuring the high standard is maintained.

The location is consistently described as beautiful, quiet, and perfect for exploring the Peak District & Derbyshire Dales, contributing to the property's high rating in this category.

Comfort is well-regarded with mentions of a relaxing atmosphere, comfortable beds, and a cosy setting. A few comments about the compact upstairs space and cold evenings slightly affect the score.

Facilities are generally praised, especially the well-equipped kitchen and lovely shower. However, there were initial issues with the fridge and heating, which were later resolved, leading to a slightly lower score.

The thoughtfulness of the host is frequently mentioned, with guests appreciating the welcome packs. While these are highly valued, it is politely noted that such personal touches, though common, are not guaranteed.

About this property

Ashbourne 4.7 miles. Situated in the picturesque hamlet of Atlow with simply stunning views of the Derbyshire Dales is Postbox Cottage. Just a short drive from the market town of Ashbourne, with a cobbled marketplace, hidden alleys and a wealth of independent shops, restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. This homely, detached, stone-fronted cottage is aptly named after the post-box embedded in one of the walls, and benefits from off-road parking, breath-taking vistas across the Dales and charming original features, perfect for friends, families or couples looking to explore the countryside with walks throughout the year. The front door opens into the entrance porch (great for muddy wellies), with a handy cloakroom, and gives access to the well-equipped country-style kitchen/diner, and a welcome pack. Limestone steps lead to an inviting sitting room with a leather sofa, armchair, oak flooring, beamed ceiling, and French doors to the terrace, perfect for evening drinks. A welcoming snug also rests on the ground floor, a private haven for those wishing to escape. A walk-in shower room featuring a heated towel rail completes the downstairs layout. Upstairs leads to the landing with a family bathroom, and master bedroom with a double bed leading to second bedroom with twin beds for your nightly rest. Outside is an enclosed garden/patio and ample parking; you can enjoy the sunsets behind the lush rolling hills or wrap-up and take a hot chocolate outside to stargaze. A stunning circular walk from Postbox Cottage takes in the quaint hamlet of Atlow, or you could take a slight detour to the traditional country pub, the Red Lion in Hognaston, for a bite to eat. On the doorstep is Carsington Water, one of Derbyshire’s most important tourist attractions. Walking and cycling trails through woodland and wildlife meadows, along with a picnic area, adventure playground, and wildlife discovery centre are awaiting to be enjoyed. A courtyard of small shops, ice cream parlour and café are nearby if you are hungry, or why not try the excellent Mainsail Restaurant, with spectacular views over the water. Carsington also has a fantastic water sports centre where you can hire paddle boards, rowing boats, and sit-on-top kayaks, along with cycle hire. No stay would be complete without visiting Matlock Bath, known as the seaside town without the sea; fantastic fish and chips, ice cream, rock and sweet shops are available along with its own cable car ride and theme park. Wirksworth is a hidden gem of a historic market town, home to a bustling high street, heritage railway and quirky Northern Lights Cinema, or head to Belper, an award-winning market town in Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, with its thriving local music and arts scene, and picturesque riverside gardens to explore. A short drive away you’ll also locate the iconic Chatsworth Estate, a stately home, gardens, and farmyard, along with the biggest theme park in the UK, Alton Towers, CBeebies land and water park. Postbox Cottage is the perfect base to explore the hills and Dales of the Derbyshire countryside with an abundance of walks and cycling trails, together with a vast array of attractions and pretty villages, there is simply something for everyone.

Ashbourne, which is located at the southernmost point of the Peak District, is the epitome of an English market town, complete with a market place with stalls, an unusual street layout, winding cobblestone lanes, coaching inns, and almshouses. The town was a sophisticated social hub during its heyday in the 18th century, and many lovely Georgian structures from this time period still stand today. The town is still known as something of a sanctuary for antique hunters today and still has a lot to offer in terms of restaurants and inns, but don't expect a deal! The Dove and Manifold Valleys are nearby for those who prefer more outdoor activities, while Alton Towers, with its thrilling collection of thrills and attractions, is only a short drive away for thrill seekers.

Post box cottage has a variety of floor levels both inside and outside and few handholds on stairs and access to other spaces. It was not an easy house for me. I think that this ought to be mentioned in the on-line information and other publicity. Jane was very good in providing all necessary for the house, but couldn’t alter the house!

It was absolutely amazing. A beautiful location and a stunning cottage. Immaculate throughout and a warm and welcoming feel. Jane is the most wonderful host - I had mentioned before our stay that our daughter has disabilities and she sent a lovely email with activities and restaurants that may suit our particular needs. She went absolutely above and beyond to help us make the most out of stay in the Peak District. Our daughter was so excited and loved the amazing welcome tray in the kitchen. Will definitely be booking this cottage again for future holidays.

Jane and Andrew went above and beyond with a welcome card, tray of goodies and milk in the fridge. It was so very kind and thoughtful. We had a lovely week exploring the area and it was really lovely to come back in the evenings to the cottage. We would highly recommend it.
