Beck Edge is a delightful stone-built barn conversion nestled into the village of Braithwaite, and with close by walks and amenities, it is the ideal base for a family or a group of friends looking to explore the breath-taking scenery of Cumbria.
Park off-road and be welcomed into this charming abode, discovering a homely sitting room where you can recline and plan the day ahead of you in the warm glow of the woodburning stove.
From here, allow the utility to take care of all of your muddy clothes as you cook up a storm in the amply fitted kitchen, serving your masterpiece at the dining table or enjoying a coffee from the sitting area as the gas fire adds ambience. There is also a cosy mezzanine where you can relax or read a good book.
When sleep calls, retire to one of three bedrooms, choosing between a king-size with en-suite shower room, a double and a single, serviced by a bathroom.
Braithwaite is a delightful village, offering a selection of pubs and cafes, with options including the Royal Oak, Ivy House Restaurant and the Coledale Inn. There is also a convenience store for all of your holiday essentials. The village is close to many fantastic walks, including those at Coledale Beck, Newlands Beck, Grisdale Pike, Bassenthwaite Lake National Nature Reserve and Derwentwater where there are watersports facilities, and Coledale Horseshoe which can be walked from the door. The property is also close to mountain biking trails at the lovely Whinlatter Forest, walks at Lodore Falls, and the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path End. For more tasty eateries, independent shops, and more attractions such as a golf course, museums, walks, watersports and Castlerigg Stone Circle, head over to the charming town of Keswick. There are many more incredible places to visit throughout the Lake District National Park, including Windermere with its lake cruises and watersports facilities, Scafell Pike, Ullswater and Aira Force Waterfall. All of this and so much more with a stay at the wonderful Beck Edge.
Between the magnificent northern lakes of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite, lies the village of Braithwaite. Still retaining much of its traditional appeal, the Coledale Beck runs through the village with whitewashed Lakeland cottages, two village shops and two real ale Inns each brimming with character! Between Braithwaite and Buttermere is the beautiful Newlands Valley, while picturesque Bassenthwaite Lake is well worth a visit. From a gentle countryside ramble to a challenging hike up Skiddaw, there really is something for everyone. Visit Mirehouse, a grand house and gardens on the shores of the lake with an open-air theatre, or take a trip around the lake. Lake District Wildlife Park, Dodd Wood, Derwentwater, and Keswick with its wide range of attractions, are also within easy reach.

Very comfortable bed, but as noted by other reviewers the towels have seen better days. A few house keeping niggles - there was no salt for the dishwasher and we couldn't buy any in Keswick as it was sold out, the en-suite toilet was running continuously and the cleaning generally was not great. Also the TV is not a smart TV as described in the listing and even the Freesat reception was hit and miss. We would have brought a laptop to connect to the TV if we had known.

The only feedback to improve future stays would be that the front door lock or key needs to be replaced, had to play around to open and lock the door. Would have welcomed a starter pack of logs for the wood burner, we would have then left the same for the next persons, nearest shop we found that sold logs was back in Keswick. Finally it would be a good idea to have a selection or cleaning liquids for the floors, toilet and bath so we could use for general clean and upkeep of your property. This is feedback purely for the owner, none of the above would put us off staying again, the cottage is in a great location and we had a very pleasant stay. Thanks again.

It does look exactly like the pictures on the website but that doesnât tell the whole story. Parking is a problem. The roads around the property are very tight and very busy, not only with vehicles squeezing around the corner but also cyclists and pedestrians passing by right in front of the house, making it difficult to park and unload the car. The road noise woke us up in the morning due to a manhole cover which clankâs every time itâs driven over. The allotted parking space to the side of the house is really tight and you have to park close to the house wall to not block the neighbours drive. The key safe is located on the opposite side of the property through the rickety gate next to the side door and a scruffy rotting log store (not a great first impression). The key safe itself was difficult to operate and the front fell off once it had unlocked. Before we arrived we did received a message informing us the dishwasher had broken, which is annoying but these things happen. (There was a hand written note in the kitchen confirming this). The general feel of the place is dated and maintenance and investment in the property over the years is clearly lacking. Some of the issues we encountered were mentioned in a previous review and had apparently been resolved. The front door lock sticks and is really difficult to lock and unlock from the inside. (Itâs identified in the safety paperwork as a fire exit which obviously is a big safety concern). Cupboard fronts, doors and plinths in the kitchen are poorly fitted and tired. Iâm not sure the filters in the extractor fan have ever been cleaned? They are yellow with grease and the ceiling above is stained. The fridge doesnât seem to be working efficiently, the lights doesnât work, the bottom shelf is broken and the door is being held together with some sort of foam/adhesive. The manual in the kitchen is partly handwritten and difficult to read especially the oven instructions which have been crossed out and sketched in biro! Thereâs a sealed unit in the rear kitchen window which has broken down and is full of condensation along with a spotlight and bulb that have blown. This room just smelt very stale so we had to open all the window to freshen the place up. The blinds throughout the property are dirty and offer no privacy from the surrounding properties or roads. As previously mentioned the array of towels supplied are very small and really old, Iâm not sure why they havenât been replaced years ago. The main bathroom was functional and the water was hot but the rainbow shower curtain wasnât very clean and had mildew around the bottom of it. The beds were fairly uncomfortable but the bedding old and worn, the single bed didnât smell great and my son refused to sleep In it. We had a 2 night stay booked but decided to cut it short and travelled home a day early as we felt really uncomfortable at Beck edge. Although this property might be acceptable to some we felt it is in desperate need of a refurbishment and freshening up, there has clearly been no investment in the property over the last 20 years and it shows. And for such an outstanding area of the country where you have to pay a premium to stay, the standard of this property is simply not good enough. Itâs very disappointing as weâve used Sykes on several occasions and properties are usually of a very good standard, but unfortunately not this one.
