This charming period house is full of character and boasts wonderful views over Helvellyn and the Derwent Fells. It is an ideal base for a gathering of families or friends. Once the home of the poet W. H. Auden, the spacious property sleeps eight guests and has a beautiful, mature garden. There are fell walks from the front door and the pretty village of Threlkeld is within a mile, while the bustling market town of Keswick is 5 miles away.
Exposed original beams throughout, fabulous views from most of the main rooms and two staircases are hallmarks of this delightful holiday home. On the ground floor are three rooms, all with wood burners. They comprise a cosy snug with seating, a dining room/conservatory, and a spacious lounge. This comfortably furnished room has a walk-in bay window, where you can sit and enjoy the panoramic vista. The handmade kitchen is well-equipped for whipping up culinary feasts and features original Honister slate flooring. Upstairs are four bedrooms: a king-size, two doubles with fell views, and a pretty twin. Outside, the large, enclosed garden has extensive lawns, mature trees and a patio with seating from where you can gaze at the breathtaking landscape.
Keen walkers will enjoy the 6-mile path from Threlkeld to Keswick along the old railway line. Stock up with a drink and homemade cake from Threlkeld Coffee Shop before embarking on the trail, which weaves its way over the River Greta on some of the original Victorian railway bridges. Lively Keswick’s many attractions include Theatre by the Lake, the Pencil Museum, and Kong Adventure Centre, with indoor and outdoor fun activities for all ages. Just outside the town is the impressive Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of Britain’s most striking prehistoric monuments.
