Guests say

High Spy is a well-received cottage in Keswick, praised for its beautiful decor, stunning views, and peaceful location. Guests appreciate the well-equipped and comfortable accommodation, though some mention the access road's condition as a concern. The property's cleanliness and the prompt response to maintenance issues are noted, contributing to a pleasant stay.

Guests consistently report the property as very clean and well-presented, with only a few isolated comments about minor issues such as a musty smell and a 'fewsty' smell on linens, which appear to be exceptions rather than the rule.

The location is highly praised for its quiet setting, beautiful views, and proximity to Keswick and walking paths. However, some guests find the access road challenging and the distance to town slightly further than expected.

The majority of guests find the apartment comfortable, with special mentions of the quality of sleep and the homely feel. A few guests suggest improvements such as darker curtains and a more consistent hot water supply.

Facilities are generally well-regarded, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the inclusion of a bath. Some guests mention issues with the driveway, dishwasher plate size, and the need for maintenance on items like the tumble dryer and outside light.

There are no specific mentions of gifts or special thoughtful touches provided by the hosts in the reviews, so it is not possible to assess this category.

About this property

High Spy is a beautiful one bedroomed, ground floor apartment, in an elevated position, situated on the outskirts of the pretty Lakeland town of Keswick. This delightful holiday home is part of Fieldside Grange, a former gentleman's residence which has been sympathetically converted into apartments and retains original charm and character. Offering contemporary accommodation, this lovely apartment boasts spectacular panoramic views from the shared grounds over Keswick to Bassenthwaite Lake. Inside your single-storey holiday apartment are a double bedroom, a bathroom with a shower over the bath and an open plan living area with a kitchen, dining area and sitting area with patio doors. Aside from the shared grounds, the property has a private patio area, from where you may wish to enjoy a drink on a summer's evening after a busy day out and about. Castlerigg stone circle (a five minute drive), St Johns in the Vale and low level countryside walks can be enjoyed directly from the doorstep. For the more energetic Skiddaw, Latrigg, Catbells and the Borrowdale Valley are all waiting to be conquered and explored. A welcoming apartment, ideal for a couple and with plenty to see and do within reach.

The popular town of Keswick is the holiday centre of the north of the Lake District and has plenty to offer the visitor at any time of year. The town has a number of shops and restaurants to suit all tastes, as well as offering miniature golf, excellent parks and the famous Theatre by the Lake.

Very peaceful and quiet, warm and comfortable. We mostly left the car and made use of the buses, there is a choice of 3 routes the X4,X5 and 555 at the bus stop 10 minutes walk away. You will need to take a torch. The bed and bedding were luxurious and this kitchen was extremely well equipped. Would definitely recommend.

The apartment is furnished and equipped to a high standard and the views of the fells and Bassenthwaite are breathtaking. We were extremely lucky to have 6 out of 7 sunny days and on the one rainy day, what else do you do but visit the pencil museum in Keswick! On a negative note, as others have mentioned, the road up to the apartment is mostly a winding track with virtually no passing places. We were very thankful each time we managed to negotiate it safely! There are a couple of places where stones have been placed to stop anyone driving onto the grass. These really could, and should, be made into dedicated passing places for everyone’s peace of mind and safety. When we had a problem one morning with the drains, we called Sykes and, by the time we came back from our day out, someone from their maintenance team had called round and the problem had been fixed. Great service! We walked several times into Keswick via the old railway track (about 40 minutes) and once, in the opposite direction, to Threlkeld. Castlerigg stone circle is just a short walk up the road and of course there are lots of higher level walks with stunning views in the vicinity. We didn't eat out, as a Tesco delivery and Booths in Keswick supplied us with all we needed for a week’s self catering. Aside the access situation, I would recommend High Spy as a great base for a week exploring a beautiful area.

The bedding is beautiful and we slept very well. The views are fantastic and we enjoyed sitting out in the garden enjoying the view in the sunshine. The jets flying over was an added bonus. We did have a problem with the dryer not drying but the engineer arrived the same day to check it out which was very prompt. The one thing that is surprising is that the state of the lane up to High Spy isn’t mentioned in the description of the property. We have a 4x4 SUV so could negotiate the unmade rough track and the pot holes ok but we witnessed standard vehicles struggling. We feel there should be a warning as vehicles could easily be damaged. The track is also very narrow with little opportunity to pass and we were very relieved we didn’t come across a vehicle coming in the opposite direction as reversing would have been a nightmare! Having said that, we would book again.
