A charming 17th-century Grade II listed cottage in a delightful and tranquil setting on the edge of the attractive hamlet of Hartsop close to Ullswater. Light and airy in the summer, comfortable and cosy in the winter, Green Bank is a popular cottage at all times of year. It is reached along a well-maintained track and forms part of a small cluster of characterful cottages and barn. The beautiful small lake of Brotherswater is just a five-minute walk away along a pretty footpath. A mile’s walk along the lake shore takes you to the popular Brotherswater Inn which serves excellent bar meals.
The cottage is an ideal base from which to walk, with High Street, Thornthwaite Beacon, Stoneycove Pike and Place Fell all within striking distance from the gate. The Helvellyn and Fairfield ranges lie a short distance away on the other side of the valley. Pasture Beck offers paddling for children (and adults), while Hayeswater, once a reservoir but now picturesque lake above the village, is good for a bracing dip. A short drive or a 50-minute walk away, Ullswater is a favourite for swimming, sailing, kayaking or taking a cruise up to Howtown and Pooley Bridge on the steamer.
The cottage is conveniently located for access to Ambleside and Windermere over the stunning Kirkstone Pass; or to Keswick along Ullswater lake shore via Troutbeck. However, if relaxing and soaking up the scenery from the comfort of your chair is more your thing, you will find it hard to match the glorious, panoramic views from Green Bank and its beautiful fellside garden (with its very own beck).
Accommodation: Green Bank is all on ground level with the front door opening into a central hallway. The cosy sitting-cum-dining room has a log-burning stove and TV with DVD player. There are views onto open fells in one direction and to the garden in the other. The kitchen, while small, is well-planned and well-equipped with an exposed-stonework wall and door to the back garden. There are two bedrooms: the double has windows overlooking the garden; and the twin room has views towards Hartsop Dodd. The bathroom has a bath with shower over, basin and wc. The entire cottage has been sympathetically restored, with oak lintels supporting the thick stone walls, exposed beams and slate floors throughout. Storage heaters provide warmth in every room.
Outside: Green Bank has a delightful, extensive and private cottage garden complete with a small beck which descends from the fellside. Wild birds and red squirrels abound. Cattle and sheep from the neighbouring farm graze on the pasture immediately surrounding the garden. The Knott, Prison Crag, Brock Crags, Gray Crag and Hartsop Dodd are just a few of the dramatic fells which can be seen from the back garden. Garden furniture, including a sturdy wooden picnic bench, is provided.
There is parking for up to two cars. The nearest pub and shop are at Brotherswater approximately one mile away, with a range of other shops in Glenridding roughly three miles distant.
Note: Wi-fi is for email or web-browsing only – the bandwidth is unfortunately insufficient for downloading. There is a telephone landline which can be used for incoming calls (or for emergency outgoing calls). Parents of young children: you will need to bring your own high chair and/or travel cot.
The bustling market town of Penrith, once the capital of Cumbria, enjoys a central position between the Lake District and North Pennines and is ideally placed for taking in all that the region has to offer. Renowned for its wealth of specialist shops, the sandstone buildings of Penrith hide intriguing yards, lanes and alleyways, with a myriad of attractive cottages, gardens and little shops. With a wide choice of excellent pubs, hotels, restaurants and entertainment, Penrith also offers a museum, and Millennium Trails round the historic city streets. Within easy reach of the town is Rheged – an innovative visitor centre with shops, restaurants, exhibitions and a giant cinema screen showing educational and informative films. Brougham Castle (The Windsor of the North), Long Meg and her daughters (the 3rd largest stone circle in England) and the historic city of Carlisle are all a short drive away, as is the stunning scenery of both the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales.
