Jaw-dropping countryside views from Arthur Ransome's house! Word has it this was the 'Swallows and Amazons' authors favourite home, and it's easy to see why! A 17thCentury cottage with every modern comfort, a sublime garden, and a fabulous games room, this is the ideal place to banish the blues and bring out your internal Lakelover!
Hilltop is the former home of Arthur Ransome and has been featured both in The Mail on Sunday and by the BBC. Your sumptuous holiday escape is a generous portion of this historic residence, luxurious to the highest level, and boasting a spacious interior with excellent natural light.
The wall of glass in the living-area is intelligently designed to really make the most of those outstanding views, and this is a place to soothe the soul and any tired muscles that your Lake District adventures bring!
The elevated location of Hilltop ensures its sweeping views over the hills and wooded vales of the Southern Lakes, and the situation could hardly be more perfect, with the shores of Lake Windermere a stone's throw away. Looking out over that fantastic vista will always instil a profound sense of tranquility, and when you want to get active, the walking, cycling and exploring possibilities are truly unlimited!
A small village and civil parish in Cumbria's Furness district is called Haverthwaite. It is situated within the Lake District National Park six miles east of Ulverston, close to Windermere's southernmost point. The Old Norse word thwaite, which typically alludes to a clearing or hamlet in the forest, is part of the village's name. The southernmost point of Lake Windermere, which gets its name from a five-arched stone bridge that crossed the River Leven in 1651, is close to the village and is called Newby Bridge. Between Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge, the renowned Furness Railway, one of Britain's oldest continuously operating standard gauge steam railways, runs. Visit one of the lakeside hotels to take in the breathtaking views of Windermere and the surrounding fells, or go to the Aquarium of the Lakes to experience how vividly the history of the lakes is brought to life by the naturally themed habitats.
