Guests say

North Lodge is a charming cottage in Grasmere, appreciated for its excellent location and beautiful gardens. Guests have enjoyed the comfortable beds and well-equipped kitchen, with the property providing a cosy and characterful stay. The cottage's proximity to local amenities and attractions, alongside its secure garden, make it a favourable choice for visitors. While some guests have suggested updates and improvements, the overall experience remains positive, with many looking forward to returning.

The cleanliness of North Lodge has received mixed feedback. Some guests found it to be tidy and well-maintained, while others noted issues with cobwebs, dust, and a general need for a more thorough cleaning. The presence of unwelcome visitors like sheep and a deer in the garden added to the rustic charm for some, but also raised concerns for others.

The location of North Lodge is highly praised, being within walking distance to Grasmere village and local pubs. Its central position in the Lake District makes it an ideal base for exploring the area. The convenience of local amenities and attractions, along with the scenic views, contribute to its high rating.

Guests have found the beds at North Lodge to be comfortable, with the property providing a cosy atmosphere. However, some guests mentioned that the mattresses and living room furniture could be updated for enhanced comfort. The presence of ensuite facilities in each bedroom was appreciated, but some guests suggested improvements to the showers.

The facilities at North Lodge are generally well-received, with a well-equipped kitchen and the inclusion of Wi-Fi. However, guests have noted that some appliances and furniture could benefit from renewal or maintenance. The garden is a highlight, though some outdoor furniture was reported to be in need of replacement.

While some guests have expressed disappointment at the lack of a welcome pack and basic kitchen products, there is no consistent mention of gifts or thoughtful touches provided by the hosts. As such, it is not possible to accurately assess the thoughtfulness category, and the score is set to null.

About this property

This delightful, Victorian lodge is set back from the Ambleside to Keswick road under Butter Crags, on the outskirts of Grasmere. Enjoying good views and a lovely garden, North Lodge offers a fabulous escape for families or two couples eager to explore this magnificent National Park in Cumbria. It is wonderfully presented throughout, with bright colour schemes and plush furnishings, making the most of an ideal setting. Enter through the front door into the cosy sitting room, where beamed ceilings and a green slate fireplace provide a welcoming atmosphere, along with plush settees and a flatscreen TV for entertainment. Move into the cottage-style kitchen where the chef of the group can relish in some home-cooking, with all the appliances, cooking utensils and crockery you could need for a self-catered break. Head upstairs to find two wonderfully presented bedrooms, including a double and twin, both with crisp white bed linen and en-suite facilities, so there is no queueing in the morning! Begin your morning in the well-maintained garden, before strolling into Grasmere village to source the ingredients for a hearty breakfast. Get to know your surroundings further by following the footpaths from the door which will take you up the little fells of Helm Crag and Loughrigg, or you can embark on a journey through Dora’s Field, a delightfully open woodland which was once owned by William Wordsworth. Travel south to Ambleside to find a great selection of amenities and attractions including the scenic waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force and the Ambleside Roman Fort, before visiting the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, home to the popular World of Beatrix Potter attraction where you can see her children’s stories come to life. Lake Windermere is also a must-visit, which is best explored on board the iconic cruiser. North Lodge is a charming dwelling, offering a homely base for all types of Lake District excursions.

Situated in the heart of the Lake District National Park is the lovely village of Grasmere, probably best known as the home of William Wordsworth, a place he once described as "The most loveliest spot that man hath found". Any visit to Grasmere needs to include The Grasmere Gingerbread shop, where the Wilson family have been making gingerbread for over 60 years. Also in the village are a number of shops, pubs, a church which dates back to the 13th century and Grasmere Lake, plus Grasmere Sports takes place every August, where you can watch participants compete in a variety of sports, including Cumberland Wrestling. Just five miles away is the town of Ambleside and Lake Winderemere where you will find shops, pubs, restaurants and the 17th century Bridge House, which is one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District. Cruises, boat trips and watersports can all be enjoyed on Lake Windermere and the towns of Windermere and Keswick are also within driving distance. Grasmere is a wonderful base for your Lake District retreat.

Walks from the cottage and 2 pubs with excellent food for the evenings. Good bus service to Ambleside, Windermere and Keswick.

Decorating was tastefully accomplished and is also sympathetic to it's period country ambiance. We were pleased to find the property warm and inviting; having arrived on a dark, cold and wet winter evening. However (as mentioned previously by other lodgers) the lack of adequate lighting on the outside stairs was somewhat disconcerting. We would have liked, as well, to find at least a starter kit for the fireplace and at the time of our departure, still had not located a guest book or any instructions.
