Guests say

High Torver House is consistently praised for its stunning views, comfortable furnishings, and well-equipped kitchen. Guests enjoy the property's peacefulness, the wildlife in the garden, and the proximity to local walks and a village pub. While some minor maintenance issues are noted, the overall experience is one of relaxation and enjoyment in a beautiful and homely setting.

The property is generally described as clean and well-maintained, with only a few isolated comments about dust and the need for minor attention in places. The positive remarks about cleanliness in the majority of reviews suggest a high standard of cleanliness overall.

The location is highly praised for its stunning views, quietness, and access to local amenities and walks. The proximity to a village pub and the ability to start walks directly from the house contribute to the high score for location.

Guests find the beds very comfortable and the house cosy, with a spacious bathroom and large bath. Some comments about heating issues and a small annex shower room slightly affect the score, but overall, the property is seen as a comfortable retreat.

The house is well-equipped, especially the kitchen, and guests appreciate the utility and family bathroom. However, some maintenance issues like a door handle falling off, low water pressure, and heating not staying on lower the score for facilities.

There are no specific mentions of gifts or special touches that would indicate thoughtfulness from the hosts. Therefore, while the property is appreciated for its homely feel, there is insufficient information to score this category.

About this property

A wonderful, detached property, standing in it own grounds, backed by the Coniston Ranges, in the hamlet of Torver near Coniston, is High Torver House. This extensive whitewashed property, perched on the fell slopes, has a woodland forest backdrop and commanding views across the village and valley beyond, offering a peaceful and beautiful Lake District retreat for a large family or group. Entering the property through the back door, you will find a cloakroom, ideal for removing coats and boots before entering the country-style, well-equipped kitchen, filled with useful appliances and amenities for all of your culinary requirements, including a fridge with ice box, oven and a dishwasher, while the utility room has further handy appliances, including a freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer, for added convenience. From here, you can access the snug, a wonderful bolthole for relaxing together in front of the woodburning stove, with a patio door that opens up onto a terrace with outdoor furniture, where you can admire your valley views. From the snug, the staircase takes you up to a king-size double bedroom complete with en-suite shower room, making this part of the house a standalone annexe if needed. Back downstairs towards the main living areas of the house, a period Minton-tiled hallway leads to the spacious dining room, which comfortably seats eight, and the sitting room with ample seating for all, along with a woodburning stove, TV and more incredible valley views. Head up the main staircase, where you'll find a pretty window seat, enjoying the wonderful surrounding views, up to the first floor, where you'll find a further three bedrooms; two king-size and a super-king-size with zip/link feature, which can be made into a twin, all of which have exposed wooden floors, tasteful décor and ample storage for your belongings. The large family bathroom has a stunning free-standing bath, resting beneath an incredible stained glass window and a separate walk-in shower, so you can choose how to prepare for each day. Outside there is parking for three cars, a barn with bike storage and an enclosed area for pets, an enclosed lawn with a monkey-puzzle tree and an extensive patio with outdoor furniture, ideal for an alfresco lunch, admiring the valley views in front of you, while the surrounding woodland and fields in front are owned by the property owner. Torver is an undiscovered gem, home to two wonderful local pubs, as well as the nearby Crake & Woodland Valleys, Torver Common and Beacon Tarn, all tranquil spots well worth exploring. Unsurprisingly, this area is very popular with walkers and cyclists of all abilities who enjoy escaping the central Lakes crowds. Just a 20-minute walk to the shores of Coniston Water, ideal for fell walking and offering some of the best mountain biking around, while no trip to Coniston would be complete without a climb up The Old Man of Coniston. You can also access a host of amenities in Coniston village, a pleasant 3-mile stroll along the old railway line footpath, as well as the Ruskin Museum. Grizedale is a short drive away, with its remarkable forest, complete with scenic forest trails for walkers and cyclists, lake and mountain views, and Go Ape, a tree top zip line attraction, offering undistributed views, for those seeking an adrenaline rush, while close by is the visitor attraction of the National Trust's Hill Top, the 17th century cottage and former home of author Beatrix Potter. Slightly further afield, you can access Hawkshead and Esthwaite Water, along with Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere lake and a host of attractions including Windermere Jetty. High Torver House is an idyllic property in a scenic Lake District location.

The small hamlet of Torver peacefully rests amidst some of the Lake District's most beautiful scenery, close to Coniston Water, and provides a welcoming 14th century inn and a 19th century church, built on the site of an ancient chapel. Torver has 2 fantastic pubs, so you will be spoilt for choice for great food. Renowned as one of Wordsworth's favourite haunts, today it’s known locally as a starting point for exploring the local fells and the Duddon Valley and offers a superb base for exploring nearby Hawkshead, Ambleside and Windermere. Excellent walking, mountain biking, climbing and watersports opportunities are available locally on Coniston Old Man and Wetherlam and the lovely woodland trails at Grizedale Forest. Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the beautiful Gondola steam yacht, visit the award-winning village of Hawkshead with its fantastic Beatrix Potter Gallery, discover Tarn Hows, one of the most visited beauty spots in the country or indulge in a spot of serene fishing on Esthwaite Water. A first class holiday location at any time of the year.

The kitchen was very well equipped. The views are absolutely stunning and the house is very well located for some lovely walks. The house is quite tricky to find down narrow lanes, but very detailed and helpful instructions were sent by the owner which was much appreciated. Parking is tight for three cars as there are gates and pathways that need to be kept free. The house is advertised as pet friendly but there are a number of restrictions on where pets can go and sleep which made it difficult. Other than that it's a great place to stay.

The views from the house are beautiful with plenty of wild birds to listen to in this quiet secluded space. The Wilsons Arms is a short walk from the property and is highly recommended for food and drink. There are plenty of walks that can be done directly from the house. We had a fantastic stay and would recommend this property!

The beds are really comfortable, the house is generally clean apart from a thick layer of dust on top of the curtains on the main landing. The views are lovely and it is very peaceful. Excellent pub, the Wilson’s Arms, within walking distance. However, it’s an old house and is looking in need of attention in places. There is too much clutter in cupboards, consequently not a lot of storage for own food in kitchen. Some of the wardrobes had so much spare bedding, it was difficult to hang clothes. The annexe in particular suffered from the following problems: very little storage space and what little hanging space there was, made difficult by surplus bedding. In the shower room there’s an extremely noisy fan which needs replacing and the light pull above the washbasin is broken. The glass shelf over the basin makes the basin almost impossible to use. You need to pay attention when using the toilet, the room is so tiny you risk burning your leg on the radiator. There are missing curtain hooks in this bedroom and in the dining room. Three of the bedrooms were equipped with emergency torches but only one of them worked. It would have been useful to have had spare bin liners and a hand towel in the kitchen. It’s worth noting that the lane to the house was being used by a large tractor which in places had churned up the track making it very muddy by the entrance gate.
