Often referred to as Great Langdale, to distinguish it from nearby Little Langdale, Langdale's name comes from the Old Norse for 'long valley'. Langdale is a u-shaped valley formed by glaciers. It encompasses the two villages of Chapel Stile and Elterwater, as well as the hamlet of High Close. Set in the centre of the Lake District, Langdale is probably best known for its mountains, from the Langdale Pikes – a group of mountains on the northern side of the village – to England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike. We found lots of long circular walks, (using the OS app and Instagram) from the doorstep. We did fell walks and lower level walks on alternate days. We got to the top of Loughrigg, and Lingmoor Fell. Weather defeated us on only one day, when we only made it up to Stickle Tarn rather than the top of Harrison Stickle as planned. Gentler walks around Elterwater, Skelwith Bridge, Ambleside, Grasmere and Rydal Water - all round we had a wonderful and memorable holiday. The cottage was a comfortable base to relax in, with a kitchen well equipped enough for us to cook a recipe box meal at the end of most days. We hope to return.. next time maybe weâll manage a proper mountain.
