About this property

If you are looking for something unique and rather special, then book a stay in Major's Lodge, a safari lodge overlooking the lakes and plains of the Watatunga Wildlife Reserve. With stunning vistas over the grazing herds of exotic deer and antelope species and with exclusive use of an electric self-drive buggy to explore the reserve, this hideaway is a truly unique staycation destination.

This single storey, fully-accessible detached lodge sleeps eight guests and is positioned with uninterrupted views over the wildlife that roam in the 170 acre reserve. The property has four bedrooms complete with two bathrooms as well as a wet room. Spot a mountain bongo grazing just metres away from the private terrace or sitting room window; or make use of our state-of-the-art bird hide for sundowners overlooking the main lake.

With access to electric buggies, you can take your time and enjoy the ever changing expanses of the woodland, savannah and lakes. On arrival, you'll be offered a free guided-tour of the reserve where you can learn all about the conservation work whilst seeing the water-buffalo, white-stork and Great Bustard, and after this, access to the reserve is free within pre-agreed hours.

Major's Lodge is well located to explore everything north west and north Norfolk offers, but if you want a very special treat, book an alfresco dinner by the Watatunga lakeside in the private barbecue hut by the lake - details available on request.

Safety is paramount whilst spending time on the reserve. Before being handed the keys to your electric buggies, you will receive a thorough safety briefing and guided tour of the reserve. The owners request that upon arrival and, before visiting the reserve you read and sign the terms of your waiver. Once signed, you are welcome to explore the reserve as you wish within the hours discussed and with your guide.

Property was ideal for us, suited our 102-year-old Mum who has mobility issues, beds were comfortable, all facilities to a very good standard, we were very impressed with the complete package especially the use of the electric buggies for the duration of our stay. the reserve was wonderful with such an array of animals and birds, but a word of warning you need to look as they can be close by but easily missed. Would recommend 100%, but not sure if I want too many to know about this hidden gem.

We had the most amazing time, thank you! It was so good to be able to go out whenever we wanted and see the animals at different times of the day – dusk was our favourite. Majors lodge was lovely, and being able to hire in a hospital bed makes all the difference. We have never used a tomato seat before but it was perfect for Jess. She loved being sat up front with us, and having such a good view of the animals. Obviously, for us, it did involve lifting her, which was manageable but not ideal. However there is no way she could have sat on the golf buggy without the tomato chair so it really did make a huge difference having it. One suggestion we did have was a visitor’s book for the lodge. On other holidays, we have found it really useful to know where other families have been and to get recommendations for accessible days out etc. While we were with you, you did a seal watching trip with Seatours, in Hunstanton, and that was really good, and very easy with the wheelchair – we would recommend this for other wheelchair users.Thank you again for the most amazing experience, it was a real privilege to be so close and get to know such amazing and rare animals. I’m sure we will be back, but in the meantime we wish you all the best with your conservation work to protect these fantastic creatures.

What a wonderful holiday! Immaculate, spacious and warm accommodation, fantastic views from bedrooms and living areas. All on one level so ideal for all ages. A lovely tour guide showed us around on the buggies and then we went out every day by ourselves to see the wildlife- it was gorgeous. My 90 year old father and 85 year old mother came on the buggies too and loved it! Thank you for a great holiday and all you do to conserve the wildlife- brilliantly managed.
