Popular tourist attractions include the Lumiere Festival, held every two years, the annual jazz festival, book week, arts week, theatre, castle and cathedral as well as a variety of shops, bars and restaurants. Take a boat onto the river or enjoy a riverside walk.

This is a great base for guests with family at Durham University, as the main campuses are all within a 20-minute drive. If you enjoy walking or cycling, The Nook provides a great base for exploring County Durham by foot or by cycle. Hamsterley Forest is 7 miles away, a 4900-acre site of popular walking trails, including the Gruffalo Trail, cycle trails and orienteering. Only 1½ miles away is Escomb Village, home to the earliest Saxon church in Britain. Witton Castle in Witton-le-Wear is 5 miles away and offers fly fishing, bird sanctuary, historic castle and beautiful grounds. The National Railway Museum in Shildon, 3 miles away, is a great destination for a fun-filled day out. In nearby Teesdale, High Force waterfall is a lovely walk, with nearby hotel bar and restaurant.
