Alnwick Castle, residence of the Duke of Northumberland, stands as a dominant feature in the otherwise picturesque and historic market town of Alnwick. To the delight of amateur and professional gardeners alike, the 2002-opened Castle Gardens are home to Europe's largest cascading water feature, a fabulous (and enormous) treehouse, a delightful rose garden, and a beautiful, walled ornamental garden. The castle is well-known for its use as the location of Hogwarts in the Harry Potter film series. The town's main square, marked by a stone cross, remains unchanged from the days when the London to Edinburgh stage coach passed through, and it serves as the perfect setting for the town's weekly Saturday market. Nearby attractions include miles of sandy beaches, dozens of castles, and boat trips to the world-famous Farne Islands, but Alnwick itself has a nice selection of shops, pubs, and restaurants.
