Guests say

Swallow Lodge is highly praised for its cleanliness, comfort, and beautiful gardens. Guests appreciate the welcoming hosts and the peaceful setting. The property is well-equipped and ideally situated for exploring Northumberland's coast and attractions. While most experiences are positive, one review mentions maintenance issues, which slightly impacts the overall impression.

The majority of guests have highlighted the lodge's cleanliness, describing it as 'very clean' and 'spotlessly clean'. One negative review does not significantly impact the high cleanliness standards experienced by other guests.

The location is frequently described as quiet, with a beautiful garden and proximity to beaches and local attractions. However, one review mentions it being on an estate near a prison, which suggests the location may not be ideal for everyone.

Guests find Swallow Lodge comfortable, mentioning 'very comfortable' accommodations and a 'super comfy' bed. There are some comments about sloping ceilings causing discomfort for taller individuals, but these are few.

Facilities are generally praised as 'well equipped' and 'excellent', with special mentions of the garden. However, one review raises concerns about maintenance and the lack of a dryer, which suggests room for improvement.

Many reviews mention thoughtful touches like a welcome tray with wine and chocolates, and toiletries provided for convenience. While these gestures are appreciated, it is noted that such gifts are a bonus and not guaranteed.

About this property

Amble 3.6 miles. A lovely couple’s retreat resting in the village of Hadston, south of Amble, Swallow Lodge is ideal for exploring the coast and countryside of Northumberland. Be welcomed into a tastefully furnished open-plan living area, where large windows and patio doors allow in seas of light, where views of the garden can be enjoyed from the sitting area, an ideal spot for curling up with a coffee and a good book. Cook up a storm in a contemporary kitchen, housing many great amenities to assist in creating a romantic meal for two, and whilst the laundry room takes care of your sandy clothes, enjoy your meal at the dining area. Freshen up in a ground-floor shower room with eye-catching sparkly walls, or a charming little bathroom with wooden ceilings and a bath, ideal for a soak amongst the bubbles. The double bedroom is a bubble of relaxation, with pine ceilings, a small library, a smart TV for reclining in bed as you catch up on your favourite shows, and views over the rear garden and the countryside beyond. Make the most of the beautiful garden, boasting three large ponds, many shrubs and seating areas, making it ideal for an alfresco affair. Hadston has local shops, and a little further away you can find a pub. Close to the property you will find a walk through the woodlands and countryside, leading down to Druidge Bay Country Park, with the Stepping Stones and walks around the lake, a great spot for birdwatching, as well as East Chevington Bay, a lovely sandy beach ideal for watersports and strolls along the shore with your other half. From here, discover Hauxley Wildlife Centre and beach, and beyond that, the bustling seaside town of Amble, where there is a picturesque harbour, piers where you can enjoy an ice cream with a view of the coast and many independent shops, tasty eateries, and riverside walks. Beside Amble rests the historic town of Warkworth, where there is a historic Hermitage and the impressive Warkworth Castle, and beyond this there is the market town of Alnwick with its museum, gardens and castle shown in the Harry Potter films, Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and Northumberland Zoo. There is something for everyone with a stay at the quaint Swallow Lodge.

Amble, a lively little harbourside town near the mouth of the River Coquet, is a great starting point for exploring Northumberland. In addition to sandy beaches, a marina, a harbour, and coastal walks to the bird sanctuary at Hauxley and the national park at Druridge Bay, Amble, formerly a center for boatbuilding, offers scenic walks in the fresh seaside air. The town provides all many amenities including pubs and eateries and fresh fish is served in many restaurants. Coquet Island, an rspb reserve with a sizable population of terns, puffins, and eider ducks, is located one mile south of Amble, and boat tours of the island are available. A short drive will take you to attractive Alnwick with its castle and award-winning gardens, charming Warkworth with its castle, and the National Trust's Wallington Hall and Cragside, in addition to a number of excellent beaches and charming coastal villages.

The property was warm and comfortable and had everything needed for a very pleasant stay. Swallow Lodge is at the edge of a large housing estate but was very quiet and there was a lovely view of the owner's beautiful garden (which they were very happy to share) from the living area and of the garden and the open field and trees beyond from the bedroom. The property was an easy drive to Amble and also to the very attractive and interesting local country park which, in turn, gave access to a fantastic sandy beach.

Previous reviews have covered the height of ceiling issues but if the property had been pristine and nice in every other way that would have been tolerable. There were not curtains on the door into the garden for privacy and the heating was outwith our control. I do not want to have to seek out the owner when I feel cold. A laundry without a dryer is useless and there was nowhere outside to dry washing. The kitchen was greasy, there was no dishwasher and the cupboards appear to be falling apart inside. We disliked it so much we left on Thursday morning. It would make me very wary of using you again - and we have used you many times before. Not worth the money - a caravan would have been about the same- and so disappointing. It was difficult to raise issues given we had to go through the owners’ hall to access the property. Your listing was by the letter accurate but we feel should have defined the extremely small size and perhaps an inspection is required to check on the state of the kitchen and bedroom and bathroom.
