Amble, a bustling small harbour at the River Coquet's mouth, is a great starting point for exploring Northumberland. In addition to sandy beaches, a marina, a harbour, and coastal walks to the bird sanctuary at Hauxley and the national park at Druridge Bay, Amble, once a centre for boatbuilding, offers all of these amenities. A variety of fish, prawns, crabs, and lobsters are landed by the large fishing boats that are moored around the harbour wall. On the side of the harbour is a fish facility that sells local fish and is open to the public. It is currently mostly a shellfish hatchery to restock levels of lobster and other shellfish. Coquet Island, an rspb reserve with a sizable population of terns, puffins, and eider ducks, is located one mile south of Amble. Boat tours around the island can be booked. A short drive will take you to attractive Alnwick with its castle and award-winning gardens, charming Warkworth with its castle, and the National Trust's Wallington Hall and Cragside, in addition to a number of excellent beaches and charming coastal villages.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Loft, a very nice place fulfilling all our needs, an excellent base for our tour around Northumberland, Beamish and Holy Island to name but two, the only improvement which didnât spoil our time would be to fix the very noisy cooker hood vent that bangs when windy and the toilet needâs securing, over all a super holiday accommodation

Well proportioned and comfortable. Our preference is to leave the car and use public transport where possible, so the close by stop for the x18 and x20 services was ideal. Close by attractions and locations including Hauxley nature reserve, Warkworth and Alnmouth (wonderful beach) were our favourites
