The ancient town of Dalton-in-Furness lies in a narrow valley on that part of the Furness Peninsula which extends deep into Morecambe Bay. The 14th-century pele tower, known as Dalton Castle, was originally a place of refuge for the monks of nearby Furness Abbey, an impressive sandstone ruin nestling in a peaceful wooded valley.
