About this property

This characterful, end-terrace stone cottage is situated in the peaceful and attractive village of Sedgwick, surrounded by countryside and near to the historic town of Kendal. The cottage was formally a worker’s home, for those who were employed at the village’s manor house, and it still retains many period features, such as wooden panelling on the cosy sitting room walls and original latch doors. Upstairs are two comfortable bedrooms, a double and a twin, with pleasant views to the village beyond. There’s also a family bathroom on the first floor, ideal for a long soak in the evening. Downstairs you’ll find a well-equipped kitchen for preparing those all-important picnics, as well as a cosy sitting room with a dining area and a warming gas fire. You can also sit outside for a morning coffee at the front of the property, or dine alfresco after your day of exploration. The location of this attractive cottage enables walking from the door and the Lancaster Canal towpath is just yards away next to the now empty section of the canal. Sedgwick also has the benefit of a good playing field which is cared for by the village as a whole, which will delight both young and old members of your party. Close by is the majestic Sizergh Castle, with its fantastic interior, small lake and beautiful gardens, set in rolling parkland and well worth a visit, as is the nearby Levens Hall, known for its world-class topiary. Kendal is a short drive away, and is often hosting festivals such as Lakes Alive, as well as a weekly market with artisan food stalls. This town is also surrounded by hills, so why not climb to Kendal Castle’s ruins and take in the views of the Lakeland Fells? The fabulous and quintessential Lake District town of Windermere is half an hour away, where you can explore the bustling centre with its many cafes and pubs, or enjoy a boat trip to Newby Bridge or Ambleside. No matter where you decide to discover, return at the end of your day’s activities to the peace and tranquillity of Wilson’s Cottage, the perfect touring base for a family adventure.

An historic Lakeland town with a fine reputation for shopping, Kendal sits on the banks of the River Kent and is known as the Southern Gateway to the Lakes. Its old cobbled lanes and byways branch off the attractive main street, and the stone ruins of 12th Century Kendal Castle sit perched on a hill with views over the town. The Abbot Hall Art Gallery's regular collection exhibits portraits by Kendal born George Romney and works by Turner and Ruskin, with other exhibitions through its links with the Tate. Both Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall with its superb Topiary Garden are nearby, as are limestone escarpments for easy walking, offering thrilling views of the Lakeland Mountains, the Howgills and Morecambe Bay. Kendal itself is ideally placed for exploring South Lakeland, the Yorkshire Dales and beyond. With other attractions such as Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life, Lake Windermere and the wider National Park within easy reach, Kendal provides a superb base for a relaxing break.
