Ashford-in-the-Water is the quintessential English village. Water is located in the centre of the Peak District National Park, about two miles from Bakewell, on the banks of the River Wye. This community was previously known for its marble, and today it is home to stone cottages built in the 18th century, as well as two charming taverns, a fine dining establishment, and a fantastic general store known for its high-quality products. Sheepwash Bridge, bordered by a former sheep washing pen and shaded by a canopy of willow trees, was an important crossing point for packhorses bringing malt from Derby across the Wye River in mediaeval times. Ashford 'Orchard' is a great place for kids to run about and play as you watch the game at the Ashford Cricket Ground. Bakewell, a famous market town not far away, is home to numerous stores, eateries, and watering holes, as well as regular farmer's markets. Explore the nearby Dark Peak and White Peak, both composed of limestone, or stop by one of the numerous nearby historic mansions, such as Chatsworth House or Haddon Hall. Close by is Britain's most popular amusement park, Alton Towers, and the breath-taking caverns of Castleton, so you'll have a hard time deciding what to do.

It would have been nice to have some condiments ie salt, pepper and vinegar but we managed without. The garden is much smaller than the photos show and could do with a little tending, as could the summer house which we didn’t use.The bed and bedding were lovely and clean but the bed could do with a larger duvet as was a little small for the size of bed. On a serious note there really does need to be a sign above the bathroom door when entering to inform of the low height as my husband is 6’2” hurt his head. I always like to leave a property as I find it but struggled to do so as no basic cleaning items were provided An anti bacterial spray would have been enough All in all we did enjoy our stay.
