Guests say

River Cottage in Bakewell is cherished for its tranquil and picturesque setting, with many guests praising the beautiful surroundings and the cottage's cosy atmosphere. The proximity to local amenities and the abundance of nature walks right from the doorstep are frequently mentioned highlights. While some guests have noted areas for improvement, the overall sentiment is one of enjoyment and appreciation for the cottage's charm and location.

Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage to be well-maintained, while others have reported issues with cleanliness such as dust, cobwebs, and a musty smell. The inconsistency in feedback suggests that while the cottage is generally kept in an acceptable state, there is room for improvement in ensuring a consistently high standard of cleanliness.

The location of River Cottage is highly praised for its peacefulness, proximity to the river, and the availability of local amenities within walking distance. The scenic village setting and the convenience for exploring the Peak District are well-regarded. However, the steep access path is noted as a challenge for some, which slightly affects the score.

Guests generally find the cottage comfortable, with positive remarks about the cosy lounge, comfortable beds, and the warmth of the log fire. However, some guests have mentioned issues with the mattresses and seating, indicating that while the cottage offers a comfortable stay, there is potential for enhancements to the comfort level.

The cottage's facilities are appreciated, especially the well-equipped kitchen and the good shower. Nonetheless, guests have pointed out the need for updates in bathroom fittings, the absence of a washing machine, and minor maintenance issues. These comments suggest that while the facilities are adequate, they would benefit from modernisation and better upkeep.

There is insufficient information in the reviews to assess the level of thoughtfulness in terms of gifts or special touches provided by the host. As such, a score cannot be accurately given for this category.

About this property

A lovely, traditional, stone-built property, River Cottage is the gable end of a row of quaint cottages situated on a steep hillside in the pretty village of Youlgreave, 4 miles from Bakewell. The cottage is full of charm and character with a delightful sitting room and a mature garden area with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. Due to the exceptional location of this cottage, the only noise that you will hear is the sound of the river. A footpath leads from the cottage down to the Bradford Dale valley bottom where there are lovely riverside walks and numerous picnic spots, while Youlgreave's old pubs and magnificent church are just a short stroll away. An ideal romantic retreat from which to explore the beauty of the surrounding National Park, Bakewell, with its regular market, Matlock and the unmissable Chatsworth House.

Set in outstanding countryside, Youlgreave is an ancient village between the valleys of Lathkill Dale and Bradford Dale, two of the most stunning areas in the Peak District. It was once the centre of the lead mining industry but is now a charming tourist destination. The village has three public houses, all of which serve food, two shops, a post office and a beautiful medieval church with some parts dating back to the 13th and14th Centuries. The market town of Bakewell is nearby and has a wide selection of shops and eateries along with its Monday market. With so many stately homes, beautiful scenery and outdoor pursuitsthe Peak District has so much to offer as a holiday destination and Youlgreave makes a perfect base to explore this lovely area.

The path is extremely steep and mostly cobbles, the wet leaves made it slippery too, it would be extremely difficult in bad weather. The cottage itself is really nice it just needs a bit of TLC a lick of fresh paint and replace the missing curtain hooks in the lounge, the small things that gives the place a lift. The toilet stoped flushing on our first night, Dawn arranged for a plumber who fixed it the following morning, but reading previous reviews this has happened before. There wasn't a guide explaining how things work and essential information re: rubbish/recycling, where to leave the bed linen etc. I really think this would have been useful. There were plenty of maps and walking guides within the property and the village was delightful. 3 pubs, little deli shops, and a free small carpark on the edge of the village. Dawn the owner was very helpful when I needed to contact her.

The path down to it was very steep and we struggled with the luggage a little that said as soon as we were in the cottage it felt like home immediately. Beautiful autumnal bradford dale just a few metres away with as much or as little walking as we wanted and so much to see and explore we never used the car all week apart from a quick call to the shops for some food one day we spent all our time walking by the river so peaceful and relaxing so much so we're have already been back to walk it again after returning home!!! Would highly recommend the cottage for anyone wanting to get away from it all and relax. The cottage had everything we needed and felt homely and warm will definitely be booking to come back soon 5 days was just not enough
