About this property

This detached Grade II listed stone cottage, formerly a pair of lead miners’ dwellings, is the oldest cottage (c.1615) in the village of Brassington, tucked away in a wonderfully peaceful location on the fringes of the Peak District National Park. With versatile sleeping arrangements, the recently refurbished accommodation is equally ideal for friends, couples or families. Approach the cottage through the fully enclosed pretty terraced garden and enter the well-equipped kitchen. Across the corridor is a well-appointed modern shower room. In the evening, you can look forward to socialising in the beamed sitting room or simply closing the shutters on the mullioned windows and relaxing with a good book in front of the cosy wood burner. For a change of scenery, the spacious dining room with sitting area is perfect for enjoying your favourite meals or sinking into an armchair in front of another wood-burning stove. Upstairs, the twin bedroom has ample hanging and drawer space and tastefully co-ordinated decoration. The large king-size double bedroom, with further mullioned windows, has a day bed for a third person as well as a travel cot. A spacious and characterful beamed family bathroom completes the accommodation. The garden is set on three levels, with wooden dining furniture (and barbecue), an arbour with seating and a top sun terrace with views towards the hills. Brassington is an unspoilt conservation village perched on a hillside on the edge of the Peak District National Park, in the midst of open countryside, very close to the Limestone Way and to the High Peak Trail for cyclists. One of the two welcoming pubs, Ye Olde Gate Inn, was the Times' cosiest pub in Britain and the Independent's 2017 unspoilt pub of the year. The attractive market towns of Wirksworth, Ashbourne, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton are all within thirty minutes, as are historic houses such as Chatsworth and Haddon Hall. Close by is beautiful Carsington Water, covering 750 acres, with some of the best sailing in the country. The site also offers boating, biking and windsurfing, along with shops, a restaurant and a children’s adventure playground. There is something for everyone in all seasons in this delightful location.

There is room for a proper freezer next to the fridge, but this space is taken up with a strange trolley contraption. Being a very old cottage, one would expect to have to stoop through some doorways, but having to bend practically double to access the upstairs bathroom lost its charm after a number of bumped heads in the middle of the night. No mention of this in the property description. The cottage has been sympathetically refurbished and was very clean. We were able to sit in the garden a couple of times and this was very pleasant.

Cottage is beautiful, 2 very large sitting rooms and a kitchen with everything you would need. Downstairs shower room was great. Upstairs though stairs were as described 2 great bedrooms, had a great nights sleep as so quiet. Lovely enclosed dog friendly garden. Over roading parking was great and 2 pubs in the village even better

We were blessed with good weather. The cottage is a few minutes walk away from the two village pubs. Brassington is a picturesque, small and friendly village. The Sunday lunch at the nearby Old Gate Inn is highly recommended. There is no shop but we just got supplies on our days out (also had a Sainsbury’s delivery on arrival day). The cottage is well equipped with a beautiful garden. I enjoyed reading/relaxing on the top patio and we had some meals outside at the table on the middle patio. We visited Bakewell, Buxton, Matlock and Ashbourne - all within a 20/30 minute drive. The Chatsworth Estate Shop at Pilsley is also worth a visit. Wanted to visit Haddon Hall but sadly they don’t allow dogs, not even in the grounds. Most evenings we spent catching up on the Olympics. Took us a couple of days to get the hang of the TV - you have to hold down the on/power button on the remote for a few seconds otherwise you don’t get a picture, just sound. Communication with owner (via Sykes app) was excellent.
