Located on the unspoiled south west coast of the Isle of Wight along Military Road, 6 Coastguard Cottages can accommodate up to ten guests in a rural setting offering a spectacular view over the English Channel and toward the white cliffs of Tennyson Down. This is an ideal holiday cottage for two families, in a stunning cliff top location with a peaceful rural setting. There is a beach below the cliffs, and access is limited and at the guest’s own risk. The property offers a twin room on the ground floor, two doubles with en suites on the first floor and a double bunk room on the same level. The location, moments from the cliff tops means that there is a wonderful variety of birds to be spotted around the area. These include swallows, skylarks, kestrels and peregrine falcons with an occasional osprey, and if you are lucky you may even see a seal nicknamed Sammy by the locals out in the water. Although not here today, there used to be a lifeboat station close to the row of cottages. The waters in front of the cottages have seen hundreds of shipwrecks and at low tide you may be able to see the winch of the Zeemansblik, the last vessel to be wrecked here in 1963.

Brook Beach and Compton Bay, some of the island’s best kept secrets, are close by, where the beaches stretch for miles with contrasting golden and dark sands, rolling seas and a stunning backdrop of multi-coloured sandstone cliffs making them popular with surfers and fossil hunters. You can book tours on the beach to see the dinosaur footprints in the sandstone ledge at Hanover Point at low tide, an area formed from a prehistoric fossilised forest. The island has become a real hot spot for cycling enthusiasts, with a choice of challenging off road bridleways, peaceful byways and level purpose-made tracks running along former railway lines. You can choose to take on the full round the island route, which is 66 miles long and is used for the annual Isle of Wight Randonnee held over the May bank holiday. Travel along the route at a more leisurely pace, and along the way you will find numerous restaurants, pubs and cafés serving tasty local produce amongst the quaint villages and towns. Sea and cliff walks can be found along the coastal paths in both directions from the property, and outdoor pursuits on the island are well catered for and include horse riding, fishing, cycling, paragliding, water sports and golf.

There are numerous attractions to discover for all ages on this beautiful sunny island. The Needles Landmark attraction is a must see and is a short distance away to the west, with its chairlift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Bay. Why not pay a visit to Queen Victoria’s favourite holiday residence, Osborne House and its gardens, perhaps Blackgang Chine which is the oldest themed attraction in the UK, Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Tapnell Farm Park, Carisbrooke Castle or the world renowned sailing town of Cowes.
