Guests say

Compton Grange is a well-received holiday cottage in Newport, Isle of Wight, praised for its stunning location, spacious and comfortable interiors, and beautiful views. Guests appreciate the well-equipped kitchen, cosy bedrooms, and the property's proximity to the beach. The garden and secret garden are highlights, offering space for relaxation and play. While some minor maintenance issues and cleanliness oversights are mentioned, the overall experience is one of enjoyment and relaxation, making it a recommended stay for families and groups.

Cleanliness is generally good, with many guests finding the property well-maintained. However, a few guests noted areas where cleanliness could be improved, such as windows, oven pans, and some cutlery. The occasional mention of stained towels and bedding slightly detracts from an otherwise positive impression.

The location is highly praised for its proximity to the beach, stunning views, and accessibility to local walks and attractions. The ease of reaching the beach via a well-made staircase and the property's position within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty contribute to its high rating.

Guests consistently report a high level of comfort, with comfortable beds and a cosy atmosphere. The property's spaciousness and the provision of various zones for eating and relaxing add to the overall comfort. Some minor issues like the lack of plug sockets by bedside tables are noted.

Facilities are generally well-regarded, with a well-equipped kitchen and ample space for activities. However, some guests have reported maintenance issues such as the need for garden upkeep, patio maintenance, and the provision of child safety features. These concerns slightly lower the score.

The thoughtfulness of the hosts is appreciated, with mentions of welcome packs and little extras. However, it is politely noted that such gifts are not guaranteed and may vary. Some guests suggested that additional touches could enhance the experience further.

About this property

Positioned in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) on the south coast of the Isle of Wight, Compton Grange is truly unique. The house stands alone, surrounded by National Trust downland and a short walk down the drive to Compton Bay, with its two mile stretch of sandy beach. From here, you can swim, surf, walk, spot wildlife, hunt for fossils, see the dinosaur footprints and watch the stunning sunsets. This area has recently been named one of the ten most beautiful stargazing spots in the UK. Compton Grange is a stone detached house, reached by a country driveway, which is also a public footpath, giving access to endless walks across the downs from your door. The three-storey cottage has stunning sea views from almost every room and is a superb base for families and friends to experience the beauty of the Isle of Wight. There is a private, gated parking area for a maximum of 4 cars, Just inside the front porch is a downstairs shower room with washing machine and tumble dryer. The light, spacious hallway on the ground floor is perfect for getting ready for your day out at the beach, walking, cycling or sight seeing. It leads into the kitchen dining room with its beautiful view across the fields to the white cliffs of Freshwater Bay and Tennyson Downs and the Needles. Watch the spectacular sunsets from your kitchen table. Go through the kitchen to a small back porch area with hooks and radiator for drying coats and keeping boots. The back door leads out into the garden. The sitting room has ample seating to watch television and cosy up by the electric fire which provides the comforting effect of a woodburning stove. From here you can enjoy the views across the garden to the lake and the sea beyond. In winter months, the beach is extremely quiet and you can often have the beach to yourself: the Compton Bay car park is virtually empty apart from the surfers and regular walkers. In the summer, the car park is busier but inside the cottage it is extraordinarily quiet and peaceful and you can be completely unaware of the activity going on nearby. Stairs lead from the hallway to the first floor where there are two bedrooms, both with zip and link superking size beds (which can also be twin rooms, if required). Both bedrooms have views over the garden and lake to the sea beyond and both enjoy the stunning sunrise. There is also a shower room and a bath with shower room on this floor, both of which have views across the sea towards the Needles. When the sun rises, the white cliffs can often turn pink in the early morning and the sight is spectacularThere are narrow stairs to the second floor with its quirky brickwork and attic bedrooms. The larger of the two has superking zip and link beds (which can also become twin beds) and has views up to the downs behind the cottage. The smaller of the two has two full size single beds at floor level and stunning views across the sea. Outside, there is a lockable garage in which guests are welcome to store bicycles, bodyboards, surfboards, golf clubs, buckets and spades and hang wetsuits and wet clothes. There is also a table tennis table. There is a selection of light garden furniture in here which guests can easily place wherever they choose to relax. The garden which surrounds the cottage, can be accessed either from the car parking area, through a five bar gate and onto a large lawn with bench from which to watch the wildlife that gathers on the lake. At the bottom of the garden are a selection of fruit trees growing pears, apples, plums and figs, which guests are welcome to pick and enjoy. The garden can also be accessed through a little gate to the right of the front porch where there is an outside tap, hose and washing line for washing out wetsuits and sandy beach kit. There is a shallow stream that runs the length of the garden and which, at present, is not fenced so families with young children should be aware of this. Outside the kitchen window, there is a picnic table from which to sit and enjoy the sunsets and listen to the stream whilst enjoying sundowners in this stunning location. From everywhere in the garden, you can enjoy sea and countryside views but if you are seeking peace and quiet, enter the fenced “secret garden” through a gate opposite the back porch. As you enter through the honeysuckle and rose arch, you arrive in a secluded and utterly private lawned area with shrubs and further seating. Here you will find a small shed with barbeque. The stream also runs through this garden which provides a quiet little suntrap, out of the wind, in which to truly get away from it all. Compton Grange is surrounded by National Trust land and it is home to a variety of wildlife. Ducks and water fowl gather on the lake. In the mornings, a family of wild geese can sometimes be seen outside on the lawn, the resident hawk can be spotted perching on the fence or chimney and a family of stoats has occasionally been seen in the secret garden. Guests are requested to note any wildlife that they see in the visitors’ book. Whilst appearing away from it all, Compton Grange is only a short drive from Freshwater Bay, Yarmouth, Brighstone and a wealth of attractions to explore and enjoy.Whether it be watching the dramatic stormy seas in the Winter from the warmth of the cottage or walking back from a day on the beach to watch the sunset from the garden, Compton Grange provides a truly memorable escape all year round.

Freshwater, which includes Freshwater Village and Freshwater Bay, is located on the Isle of Wight's westernmost point. The West Wight Sports Centre and Indoor Swimming Pool are located in Freshwater village, which has an excellent mix of small independent stores, eateries, and the West Wight Sports Centre. Freshwater Bay and adjoining Compton Bay attract many visitors and surfers all year because of its stunning high chalk cliffs, rolling downs, and lovely beaches. The renowned Freshwater Bay Golf Club, which overlooks the English Channel and offers stunning coastal sea views from most tees, is a haven for birdwatchers, cyclists, and walkers, with many wonderful walks to be enjoyed not only on West Wight but across the entire Isle of Wight, criss-crossing over a much varied island landscape.

Thanks for a great stay, we will definitely be coming back !

We found the cleanliness a bit lacking, found dirty cutlery, water marks on surfaces and the barbecue was very rusty and dirty. Some of the towels and bedding are stained. The garden is a lovely size and great for kids. The patio area, in our view is verging on dangerous, it is crumbling, one of our party had a bad fall resulting in facial bruising, the wooden garden furniture is rotting and unstable. General outside maintenance is poor.

Wonderful to walk to the surf and back. Fabulous house with plenty of space and well- equipped kitchen. 2 fridges very handy. It’s great and perfect place to start walking from. Car park opposite which had NT loos ( opened the week we were there) and food truck for coffee, ice cream and snacks. All in all it was a perfect place for us.
