The landscape of the Dartmoor National Park is a unique mix of dramatic tors, wooded valleys, stunning gorges and a sprinkling of picturesque villages. On the south-eastern slopes of the moor is the quiet village of Holne, where village life centres around the 13th century church and Community Shop & Tearoom. The Two Moors Way, a long-distance route stretching between Dartmoor and Exmoor, and Buckfastleigh and the ancient stannary town of Ashburton are both four miles away. Forestoke Linhay is a detached, barn conversion on a small working farm on the edge of Holne. With open moorland just outside the farm gates its an ideal location for walkers, cyclists and nature lovers. The cottage is traditionally furnished and full of character with exposed stone walls, wooden beams and vaulted ceilings. The living area is small and cosy, warmed by a wood burning stove. Adjoining the lounge, there is a rustic conservatory with doors opening onto the enclosed, terraced patio garden. From the twin bedroom, doors open onto a small patio and the pretty double bedroom has extensive views towards Torquay and Teignmouth, taking in Hembury and Holne Woods.
Ashburton is in the Dartmoor National Park, a spot from which to explore the moors and coastline. There is plenty of scenery in South Devon and it offers opportunities for walking, pony trekking, canoeing, fishing and beach-goers. Ashburton has artisan shops and a museum. The seaside town of Teignmouth is half hour away and Blackpool Sands further down the coast is one of South Devon's most beautiful beaches. On the edge of the moors so open access walking just up the drive. Couple of minor issues. The shower was poor and the headroom in the bathroom restricted. Village community shop, but quite expensive, and a pub in village. Both an uphill walk of approaching a mile.

However there were many problems with the cottage. The bed was extremely uncomfortable with no support in the middle. I had to roll up the spare quilt and put it under the mattress to stop ourselves rolling into the middle. There was no shower and not enough hot water for a decent bath. The floorboards in the bedroom, landing and stairs creaked loudly so that if one of us got up it always woke the other. The 2 single beds were damp, the walls mouldy and the wardrobe unusable because of the damp smell. The sofas were sooo uncomfortable . The kitchen not really fit for purpose ie, limited cupboard space, cooker had such low pressure it took an age to cook anything. The conservatory leaked. No view of the garden or countryside from the outside space. In general the cottage was tired and in need of updating. Not a place I will be going back to.

Very comfortable, well-equipped and lovingly maintained. The view from the main bedroom is just beautiful, and we loved the remote location and the great local village and community shop. The sunny conservatory and private yard was very attractive. The host, Margaret Weeks, was friendly, helpful and welcoming and close on hand if any problem were to arise ( we had none!). The location might be a bit of a challenge for nervous drivers - quite steep hills, narrow bridges and high-hedged lanes are the norm in this vicinity - we just loved the relatively remoteness. Wonderful immediate access to the moor - literally outside the entrance gate.
