Guests say

The Bakehouse in Gidleigh receives high praise for its beautiful, comfortable layout and idyllic location on the edge of Dartmoor, offering direct access to stunning walks and wildlife. Guests appreciate the well-equipped facilities, the property's character, and the friendly hosts. Some concerns over cleanliness and space constraints are noted, but overall, guests enjoy the peacefulness and charm of this cosy cottage.

Most guests found The Bakehouse to be a lovely stay, though there were a few mentions of dust and cobwebs. Regular cleaning seems to be in place, but attention to detail could be improved to ensure a consistently spotless experience.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity and proximity to Dartmoor, offering excellent walking opportunities and a remote, peaceful environment. It is considered a highlight and a perfect spot for a getaway.

The cottage is generally regarded as cosy and homely, with a comfortable layout. However, some guests felt the space was tight for four people, and there were comments about the need for better mattresses.

Facilities are well-received, with the cottage being well-equipped and possessing a lot of character. The main bedroom is airy and the fireplace is a standout feature. Some minor maintenance issues were raised, but overall, the facilities meet guests' needs.

While guests mention thoughtful touches like flowers and food upon arrival, there is not enough consistent information across reviews to accurately score this category. It should be noted that such gifts, while appreciated, are not guaranteed.

About this property

Equidistant between the pretty villages of Throwleigh and Gidleigh is The Bakehouse, a beautifully renovated, late medieval cottage sheltered by oak trees. Inside is smart with slate floors downstairs and beautiful oak floors upstairs. The living area is small but perfectly formed, and well thought out to provide you with everything you'll need, as well as a host of features, including granite worktops, a huge fireplace with wood burning stove and original ancient stone stairs. On the first floor are two bedrooms, a roomy king-size double with handsome roof timbers and a twin (2'6" beds, linkable to 5' double). Sunny and south facing, The Bakehouse looks out over its own neat, walled garden where you can sit in the sun and listen to bees, and birdsong. The cottage is part of the historic group of farm buildings around the ancient farmhouse. The owners run the farm, where cattle, sheep and ponies are grazed. Nearby Chagford offers a choice of interesting shops and inns, a seasonal outdoor pool and tennis courts, and the cathedral city of Exeter is just 17 miles away. Sandy beaches are a 20 mile drive away. The Bakehouse is a lovely retreat with wonderful walking directly on to the moors from your doorstep; abundant wildlife and moorland archaeology.

A picturesque town at the northern point of Dartmoor National Park in Devon, Chagford is small in size but is packed with amenities and things to do. There is a wide range of shops as well as four pubs. Chagford also has more active facilities such as public tennis court and an open-air swimming pool to enjoy at your leisure.

Simply put, it has a lovely, welcoming feel to it. Everything is high quality. The cottage is very well equipped, warm and cosy (the underfloor heating is great), and has been tastefully converted. The bedrooms and bathroom are a good size. The kitchen-living area is compact, great for a couple, but four adults may find it a little small. There are walks straight from the door (do visit the Scorhill Stone Circle). Chagford is charming and has everything one could wish for - a great deli, four pubs, a fruit and veg shop, traditional ironmonger's, butcher, two bakers, a good wine shop, pharmacy, two craft galleries, a selection of cafes and a superb independent bookshop. Oh, and a warm welcome from everyone one meets. We will definitely be back.

The mattress in the master bedroom completely worn out and needs replacing. The mattress in the smaller bedroom not much better ,also needs replacing.it was a pleasant stay the marks would have been higher the mattresses let it down.

We had forgotten some essential things for our trip, they helped us out with this, and also when we had a problem with a car. A lovely property and location.
