Guests say

Little Barton is a charming cottage in Somerset, praised for its stunning views, peaceful setting, and friendly hosts. Guests enjoyed the beautiful gardens, the proximity to nature, and the occasional delight of a passing steam train. While some found the cottage cosy and well-equipped, others suggested it could benefit from updates, particularly in the kitchen and lounge areas. The presence of the hosts' dog was a highlight for many, adding to the homely feel of the stay.

Reviews on cleanliness are mixed, with several guests finding the cottage to be clean and welcoming, while others noted areas where cleanliness could be improved, such as dust and grime in certain spots. The majority did not raise cleanliness as a major issue, suggesting a generally satisfactory standard.

The location is highly praised for its beauty and tranquillity, with stunning views and a large garden. The rural setting and proximity to nature were appreciated by many guests. However, some noted the narrow access lanes as challenging, which is typical for the area.

Guests found the cottage to be cosy and the bed comfortable, but several reviews mentioned that the living room furniture and dining arrangements could be more comfortable. The mixed feedback suggests that while the cottage is generally comfortable, there is room for improvement in this area.

The facilities received mixed reviews, with some guests satisfied with the cottage's equipment, while others highlighted the need for updates, particularly in the kitchen and bathroom. The mention of a basic TV setup and lack of power in the shower suggests that some of the facilities could be modernised.

Several guests mentioned thoughtful touches, such as a welcome bottle of wine and the hosts' friendliness, which contributed positively to their stay. However, as these gestures may vary and are not guaranteed for every guest, they are a delightful bonus rather than a consistent feature.

About this property

Resting in a stunning part of rural North Somerset, Little Barton provides the perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of the modern world. Located in the grounds (to which you have full access) of the owners' home, the cottage commands panoramic views of the surrounding glorious countryside. Adjoining the owners' home, the cottage is situated all on one level. Enter into the inviting lounge / dining room, where you will either be able to curl up with a good book, or take time and relax over a lovingly prepared meal in the adjoining, well equipped galley kitchen. All the while taking in the sunning views afforded by its lovely location. From the living room step into the adjoining bedroom, complete with en-suite shower room, where the only thing that might keep you awake is the abundant wildlife. From the cottage take the opportunity to enjoy the extensive grounds: a morning coffee outside the cottage or a glass of wine on the elevated deck in the evening?. Or perhaps a picnic in the secluded dell, on the banks of the Doniford Stream that runs through the grounds. For the rail fans among you, there is the added bonus that the cottage lies beside the track of the West Somerset Railway, and you will be able to see the historic steam locomotives trundling by as they make their way along the 20 mile stretch of track between Bishop's Lideard and Minehead (don't worry about your sleep being disturbed - they don't run before 10.00 or after 5.00).

If you can tear yourself away from your rural bolthole, travel to the nearby village of Stogumber, an idyllic spot with thatched cottages, a village shop and a pub, serving a great dining menu. Alternatively, you could travel in the other direction to The Carew Arms in Crowcombe for a delicious meal. Keen walkers can look forward to exploring the Quantock Hills AONB and Exmoor National Park, slightly further afield, or if you are visiting during the summer months, travel to Minehead or Watchet (which is only 4 miles away) for a day at the beach. With so much to see and do, secure your stay at Little Barton for that well deserved break.

Nestled between the eastern flank of the Brendon Hills and the Quantock Hills is the idyllic village of Stogumber, set amidst the stunning countryside of Somerset. Those visiting this quaint village can look forward to meandering the high street, which is lined with thatched cottages and the heritage highlight of the 14th-century, St Mary's Church. Within the village, you will also a plethora of amenities including a village shop and post office, a school, a country pub, and several small specialist shops. As well as the notable parish church, the village plays host to a carved tomb of Sir George Sydenham, the father-in-law of Sir Francis Drake and a rare medieval stone pulpit, one of only two in Somerset, just two of the many historical highlights within the area. On the doorstep are the Quantock Hills and the majestic landscape of the Exmoor National Park, both of which provide excellent walks and opportunity to discover breath-taking scenery. Alternatively, you could head further afield to the town of Taunton, where you will be spoilt for choice by the selection of amenities that are waiting or during the summer months, travel to Minehead for a day at the beach. Other attractions from here include Cleeve Abbey, Tropiquaria Wildlife Park and the National Trust owned property, Coleridge Cottage. All-in-all, Stogumber is a great base for touring Somerset and beyond.

A most enjoyable stay. Warm, cosy cottage in a fabulous setting, with a very kind, welcoming host and a friendly dog (for those who arrive dog-less!). So relaxing and peaceful, we hope very much to return.

  • David

Huge garden the dog loved and could run free. Lovely family very welcoming. Toilet flush needs sorting and takes ages to fill.

  • Sonia

Very dated and could do with an update. Out in the middle of nowhere. Very very narrow roads to get to property. Photos show property in a better lite than in real life.
