The Summer House is a unique and atmospheric property, praised for its peaceful location, stunning views, and historical charm. Guests appreciate the well-thought-out layout, cosy bedroom with comfortable bedding, and the ingenuity of the kitchen cabinet. The property's tranquillity and proximity to local attractions make it a favoured romantic retreat, despite some concerns over cleanliness and maintenance.

Guests have expressed concerns about cleanliness, mentioning cobwebs, grubbiness, and the presence of insects. However, these issues seem to be inconsistent, with some guests finding the property very clean. The historic nature of the property may contribute to these perceptions.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, beautiful countryside views, and proximity to historical sites and local attractions. It is described as peaceful and perfect for a quiet getaway.

The bedroom is frequently mentioned as spacious and comfortable, with a cosy wood burner and comfortable bedding. However, some guests found the bathroom and kitchen areas small, and the spiral staircase challenging.

The property's facilities are generally appreciated, especially the clever kitchen design and the welcome hamper. Some guests noted issues with maintenance, such as the dishwasher panel and outdoor furniture, suggesting room for improvement.

The welcome hamper is a recurring positive point, indicating thoughtfulness. However, it should be noted that such gifts, while appreciated, are subject to change and not guaranteed for every stay.

About this property

A unique and luxuriously appointed Grade II listed tower, formally a banqueting house and now a stunning holiday home located north east of the beautiful Shropshire Hills National Landscape. The Summer House is surrounded by spectacular countryside in a very secluded setting, a perfect romantic escape.

The Summer House and Octagonal Tower, built circa 1607 by Sir Francis Newport, was originally used as a banqueting house for entertaining his dinner guests. Sadly the main house was destroyed by a fire and never rebuilt, therefore The Summer House, now part of the Raby Estate, is the only remaining structure from that time. Today, this Grade II listed tower provides a very special and romantic retreat, set within the rolling Shropshire countryside, enjoying excellent views to the east, and views of the Shropshire Hills to the south and the west.

With exposed oak beams, doors and windows, inside The Summer House is bursting with character and charm. The ground floor open-plan living space enjoys two sets of french doors with full height glazing, taking full advantage of those far-reaching views. Clever use of space here provides a dining area, a couple of armchairs for relaxing in front of the television, and a 'secret' kitchen, hidden away inside a cupboard when not in use; how it conceals a dishwasher, fridge with ice-box, sink, hob and multi-function microwave is a mystery, but it does! Another ingenious design is the modern shower room, snuggling inside the void beneath the spiral turret staircase. Climb the winding stairs (with care) up to the spacious bedroom, enjoying its own sitting area in front of a cosy wood burning stove and a television, along with a comfy king-size bed, and windows to each aspect of the tower to frame those magnificent views. Outside, a private terrace houses outdoor dining furniture, perfectly positioned to capture the views as you fire up the barbecue and dine al-fresco.

The property is tucked away in the hamlet of Eyton-on-Severn, near the ancient Roman settlement at Wroxeter, and is surrounded by stunning countryside. Immediately to the east rises the Wrekin, a formidable hill said to be the result of a giant depositing a spade of earth he had intended to use to bury Telford. To the south lies the River Severn; and beyond the Shropshire Hills, the last English heights before the Welsh border. All of the surrounding countryside can be readily explored from The Summer House. Guests can stroll amongst the fields and lanes directly from the front door via nearby public footpaths. Or explore further afield into Shropshire and the border counties. Attingham Park is only 4 miles away, and with a short twenty minute drive you can be in the black and white medieval market town of Shrewsbury.

Additional Information:

Sorry, no children, infants or pets.

Due to the age of the property there are low beams and uneven steps.

Roof access is not permitted for health and safety reasons.

There is a drop at the end of the garden, please approach with caution and not in low light.

Excellent welcome food and facilities. Could have done with an OS map of the area.

This is a truly a unique property situated in a beautiful part of England. Overall we enjoyed our stay in the Summer House and loved watching the various birdlife from the ground floor windows. The bed is comfortable and there are plenty of drawers for your clothes, though no wardrobe. The kitchen/living room is reasonably equipped with a clever kitchen design within a dresser. The dishwasher has interesting controls which we eventually worked (no manual). There are a couple of negatives though, there were cobwebs in various places and the microwave was in a disgusting state and unusable. Overall alovely place let down somewhat by poor housekeeping.
