Nestling at the foot of Great Whernside, near the head of Upper Wharfedale, this idyllic village makes the perfect place from which to explore the wonderful scenery and pretty villages of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is National Trust owned - an indication of the beauty of its classic countryside, with dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valley side woodland. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best walking and mountain biking areas in the Dales, with The Dales Way passing nearby. The village itself lying on the banks of the River Wharfe is a real delight with traditional built stone cottages, three pubs, a Post Office, speciality shops and a hotel. No surprise that the hit movie Calendar Girls was filmed here and in other locations throughout the area. An excellent base for enjoying the famous Dales, historic market towns, caves and waterfalls of this magical area.

The cottage was comfortable, especially the bed, and warm. We didnât give it 5 stars because kitchen equipment is basic (more mugs needed, bare minimum of sharp knives and utensils) and no hairdryer. Also if it had been wet thereâs nowhere to take off muddy boots and wet kit without getting the kitchen wet and muddy. It was a great size for 2 of us and a small dog. You would struggle with 6 people especially in the kitchen/dining. A bench outside for de-booting would be a lovely addition. The 2nd floor bathroom night storage heater didnât work.
