About this property

Oak Cottage is a delightful cottage tucked away in an idyllic setting within the village of Kettlewell, North Yorkshire. Offering two bedrooms and a charming interior, Oak Cottage is a magnificent retreat for couples looking to escape to North Yorkshire and the Yorkshire Dales. Upon arrival, park up in the off-road parking area, or the nearby car park and take in the countryside backdrop. Step inside and discover the kitchen, boasting a combination of old and new, with a centre dining table being the spot to enjoy mealtimes. Carry the conversation into the lounge, where you can curl up in front of the woodburning stove, flick on the TV and unwind for the evening. To the outside is a beautiful, open garden, offering a spacious lawn along with a set of bistro furniture and sun loungers so you can sit back and relax amongst the shrubbery. Find comfort in either of the bedrooms, choosing between a super-king-size or double, each with their own wonderful vistas of the Yorkshire. Head out of the door and explore the chocolate box village of Kettlewell, home to a great selection of reputable pubs, perfect for when you fancy a night off cooking. Nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales, Oak Cottage is perfectly placed for a walking holiday, whilst cyclists can venture along the undulating hills and winding country lanes that snake through the valley; with secure bike storage on offer, feel at ease that you can enjoy the countryside on two wheels. Seven miles away lies the town of Grassington, a popular, characterful little town, with lots of events organised throughout the year, as well as being the location of Darrowby in the Channel 5 series ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. All of this and more awaits at Oak Cottage.

Nestling at the foot of Great Whernside, near the head of Upper Wharfedale, this idyllic village makes the perfect place from which to explore the wonderful scenery and pretty villages of this magnificent Dale. Much of Upper Wharfedale is National Trust owned - an indication of the beauty of its classic countryside, with dry-stone walls and barns, important flower-rich hay meadows and valley side woodland. Undoubtedly, this is one of the best walking and mountain biking areas in the Dales, with The Dales Way passing nearby. The village itself lying on the banks of the River Wharfe is a real delight with traditional built stone cottages, three pubs, a Post Office, speciality shops and a hotel. No surprise that the hit movie Calendar Girls was filmed here and in other locations throughout the area. An excellent base for enjoying the famous Dales, historic market towns, caves and waterfalls of this magical area, along with both Bolton Abbey and Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal, Percival Hall Gardens, and The Himalyan Garden and Sculpture Park.

Kettlewell is a perfect location and has walks in every direction. There are lots of lovely pubs and cafes in kettlewell and the surrounding villages. The village store has lovely pastries you can cook in the oven for breakfast.

It is worth re-emphasising that the garden is a shared space and not suitable for children and dogs to run about as the actual amount that belongs to the cottage is very narrow. Saying that we sat out in the garden and it is lovely. We kept our dog on a lead out there in respect of the other garden owners. Great walks right out of Kettlewell and two pubs serving food. The Kings Head was closed down when we were there. The village shop stocks extremely limited lines and you can't rely on it for supplies. This is a shame as we like to shop locally when we can.

It has been done up to a very good standard. The kitchen/dining area has everything you need. It was handy having the washing machine after muddy walks. The living room is cosy with a big picture window looking over the beautiful garden and a great log burner, which we used after a very wet walk. We loved the walk-in shower in the bathroom, providing lots of hot water. Both bedrooms have very comfy beds and storage/handing space. The bed in the large back bedroom is huge, and again has a big picture window overlooking the garden. The garden is shared but there is seating you can use. Sadly it was too wet during our stay but I did take our dog for a little wander around on his lead. The village is lovely, with lots of walks available. There are two pubs next to the cottage. At the Racehorses Hotel we took advantage of their take away menu, and both the pizza and Butter Chicken Curry were excellent. We also ate in The Blue Bell Inn and enjoyed the food. Overall we had a lovely stay and would be happy to return.
