Just two steps down from street level, its private front door would once have been the servants’ entrance to the house above. Built around 1730 the house stands on the foundations of a medieval stone cottage that was originally on the site. Later on, this lower floor served for many years as the local dairy with milk being dispensed from churns and delivered around the old town by horse and cart.
Bright, light and characterful, this lovely apartment balances style and comfort in equal measure. With its underfloor heating and multi-fuel burner, it’s a superb place to come back to after that long walk along the cliff tops. The Cleveland Way passes through Scarborough to its final destination in Filey, so there are plenty of good walks right from your doorstep.
The town centre is just along the road with some excellent restaurants and bars. If you fancy the theatre there’s the Stephen Joseph Theatre, home to most of Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s world premieres. Just a two minute walk and you can be sat on the beach. Scarborough is famous for its two bays, the North and South Bay. They are both very different in that the South Bay is the livelier of the two, with donkeys, amusements and traditional seaside facilities, whereas the North Bay is a quiet bay overlooked by Scarborough Castle.
The resorts of Filey, Flamborough Head and Bridlington are just a short drive away, with their award winning beaches. The rspb bird sanctuary at Bempton is well worth a visit. You’ll see thousands of puffins and guillemots in their natural habitat as well as the seals that lounge on the rocks. In the area there are plenty of stately homes to visit such as Castle Howard, home to the filming of Brideshead Revisited, Sledmere House, Burton Agnes Hall and Sewerby Hall. The medieval city of York can be reached in less than an hour by train or by car. With plenty to see and do there, it makes for a great day out. Visit some of the local market towns such as Pickering, Beverley and Driffield, all selling local produce and gifts.
The Old Dairy is a perfect base to visit the North York Moors, the coast and the Wolds.
