Sea & Sky Cottage is a contemporary and eco-friendly seaside cottage situated in the heart of the thriving town of Donaghadee in County Down.
This charming abode welcomes families or a group of friends seeking a coastal holiday to this corner of Northern Ireland. From the property, you will enjoy views of the Scottish coast and the iconic Donaghadee Lighthouse, known for its unique architectural design. A footpath takes you to the Commons play area, with access to the beach, which is perfect for budding rockpoolers. Donaghadee (Port Devine in the BBC One Northern Ireland drama "Hope Street") is a short stroll along the coastal path.
Upon entering the property, you will be greeted by a spacious open-plan living area, with a light and airy feel courtesy of the floor to ceiling windows, creating a panoramic view of the Irish Sea. Prepare some home-cooked meals in the well-equipped kitchen and savour your culinary creations at the dining table perched in the centre, awaiting dinner party natter and family bonding. Afterwards, curl up in the sitting area, complete with a warming woodburning stove, ideal for those chillier evenings. Or for a more intimate setting, there is an additional snug, adorned with a Smart TV, perfect for catching up on your favourite shows. If the weather permits, the enclosed rear patio provides a wonderful space for alfresco dining or simply enjoying a glass of wine under the stars. Here, you will find a variety of furniture, a fire pit and a barbeque, perfect for those warm summer evenings. For those seeking entertainment, venture into the games room, boasting a Smart TV, a selection of games and folding pool table, ensuring hours of fun for all ages. This room is also equipped with a plush sofa bed to create a convenient space for an additional sleeping arrangement. As the day draws to a close, retire to one of the four tastefully-presented bedrooms; most of which boast picture-postcard views of the coast, so drift into a peaceful slumber as you watch the rhythmic dance of the waves from your window. For the guest seeking a spot of luxury, the king-size room boasts an elegant en-suite with a walk-in shower, while a versatile truckle room offers flexible sleeping arrangements for all party configurations. The family bathroom is a real highlight, featuring a freestanding bath, providing a tranquil space to unwind and soak your muscles after a day of exploration. A ten minute walk along the coastal path takes you to Donaghadee with its array of bars, restaurants and independent shops. Take a seat at Lemon's Wharf while the children play, with views of the Copeland Islands, the Scottish coast and the majestic Donaghadee Harbour and the Lighthouse, known for its role in naval history and a prominent fixture of the town's coastline. Visit the Motte-and-Bailey fortress, known as The Moat, which offers a picturesque picnic spot at the heart of Donaghadee. The more adventurous can try paddleboarding, open water swimming, sailing, golf and lawn tennis, all accessible within walking distance or a short drive from the house. Venture further out and visit the local sights, starting off with marvel at the beauty of National Trust Orlock Point, managing an array of wildlife and outstanding coastal landscapes. Mount Stewart, a neoclassical house and Gardens overlooking Strangford Lough is less than 10 miles away, as is Greyabbey, the best example of Anglo-Norman architecture in Ulster, dating back to 1193. Belfast City Centre (and Titanic Belfast) are a short half hour drive away. Sea & Sky Cottage is the perfect base to experience the treasures of County Down.
Donaghadee is a delightful town resting on the North East coast of the Ards Peninsula and is the closest point to Scotland. The town offers a wonderful blend of contemporary buildings with historical landmarks which include a Norman motte, a pretty harbour and Grace Neill’s Pub which is reported to be the oldest pub in Ireland. As you wander through the streets you will find a superb selection of shops, pubs and eateries. Attractions within the town include the harbour and lighthouse, where you can discover the breath-taking views across the Irish sea and on a clear day you will be able to see Scotland. Another attraction within the area is the A2 road which follows the coastline of County Antrim, with opportunities for stopping off in Counties Down and Londonderry. Alternatively, head to the town of Bangor where you will find three golf courses and the Pickie Funpark, or venture to Northern Ireland’s capital Belfast which was the birthplace of the RMS Titanic. Correspondence with the owners was always quick, clear and helpful. We would highly recommend this property for any family looking for a relaxing break.

The only negative would be that all the bins were full especially the glass one so we had no where to leave our rubbish and bottles, jars etc we had to take it all to the recycling in the village in order to fit ours in, which was a little inconvenient, especially as was supposed to book in advance but they were very kind and let us recycle all the previous holiday makers rubbish

The location and views were absolutely stunning. The cottage is beautifully laid out and finished to a high standard, with a thoughtful touch that makes it incredibly child-friendly. A special shoutout to the owners for providing Lego, which was a hit with our youngest (who usually isnât keen on holidays) right through to the teens! The kitchen was the heart of our stay â a great space for family breakfasts and dinners that made the holiday truly memorable. There are plenty of places within walking distance to explore, including a nearby playpark that you can see from the garden or the house, which was a bonus for us with kids. The house was warm, comfortable, and perfect for a family or friends' getaway. If you're up for a short drive, the National Trust properties Mount Stewart and Castle Ward are both well worth a visit. We particularly enjoyed the option of taking a short ferry ride across from Portaferry to Castle Ward, adding a little adventure to the day. There are also plenty of shops, parks, and sandy beaches close by, as well as great dining options within walking distance. And donât miss a quick tour of The Moet! Overall, an excellent stay in every way.
