Rockcliffe is one of Scotland's most attractive stretches of coastline, and makes a wonderful base for a family holiday with a safe sandy beach and easy coastal walks. To the north, a network of paths take you through mixed woodlands and wildflower meadows to Kippford, a busy sailing and water sports centre, and also a popular destination for eating out with two good pubs. In the other direction, the path follows the shoreline to Castle Point and then along cliff tops towards Sandyhills. At low tide one can walk to Rough Island, a National Trust for Scotland bird sanctuary.

The area provides interest for all, including a wide variety of outdoor activities: walking to enjoy the great diversity of landscapes, flora and fauna; mountain biking for all abilities on the 7stanes trails in the peaceful Dalbeattie Woods and Mabie Forest; sailing and kayaking in the Urr estuary; and bird watching in the estuary, along the coast and at the nearby Mersehead rsbp reserve. There is horse riding at local stables, fishing of all sorts and golf at local 9 and 18 hole courses, including the easy to reach Championship links course at Southerness. The rich tapestry of Scottish history can be explored at Sweetheart Abbey in the charming village of New Abbey or at the many castles in the area including the majestic Caerlaverock Castle on the east side of the river Nith in Dumfries or closer by at Threave Castle with a river for a moat that has to be crossed by boat! The regions connections to Rabbie Burns should not be forgotten with his farm at Ellisland just north of Dumfries and a museum in the town's Burns Street.

Seabank Cottage was comfortable and well appointed. Julian and Theo are helpful hosts, on hand when we had queries. The is plenty to do within easy reach -Dumfries where we would recommend the Camera Obscura on a clear day, and the museum which it is part of; Kirkcudbright for art lovers, and Threave Gardens. The coastal path has lovely views out over the estuary. The long drive up the track to Bainloch Deer Park's cafe at Sandyhills is worth it for the views of deer while you have your meal.
