Jocks Hoose is a well-received cottage in Dumfries, praised for its beautiful location, high-standard furnishings, and cosy atmosphere. Guests enjoyed the stunning scenery, wildlife, and peaceful walks. The large garden is a hit, especially with pet owners, though some minor improvements are suggested.
The property is generally described as immaculately clean. One mention of a dog-friendly rug with a slight smell suggests a minor issue, but this does not seem to be a widespread concern.
The location is highly praised for its beautiful scenery, proximity to the River Nith, and the abundance of wildlife. It is considered idyllic and peaceful, ideal for walks and enjoying nature.
The cottage is consistently described as comfortable and cosy, with very comfortable furnishings and a cosy atmosphere that guests appreciated.
Facilities are well-regarded, though some guests noted areas for improvement such as information on bins, hand soap availability, and basic essentials like tea and coffee. The mention of a fully enclosed garden for pets and the ability to charge a car are positives.
There is no mention of gifts or extra thoughtful touches provided by the hosts, so it is not possible to assess this category. As such, guests should not expect gifts as part of their stay.
Jocks Hoose occupies a great location right on the salt marsh next to the River Nith, Glencaple. With fantastic views, spectacular bird and wildlife on the doorstep and lots to do in the local area the cottage is the perfect base for a family holiday!
Jocks Hoose is an idyllic end-terrace cottage, on the foreshore of the River Nith, in a small hamlet close to Glencaple. Just 3 miles from Dumfries, Capital of the South of Scotland , the cottage is just as suitable for small families as it is for friendly get together. The superb layout of the cottage and its location, with magnificent views across the River Nith and surrounding countryside, will leave you wanting to book again and again!
The cottage's accommodation includes a spacious Sitting room with plush sofas and a cosy electric wood burner, making this room a relaxing and sociable place for the whole family. Adjacent to the Sitting room is the kitchen, which has been fitted with high-quality wooden units and sleek black worktops. The dining area has seating for up to six people and is the ideal place to sit and enjoy a home cooked meal together. Upstairs, you will find two bedrooms, one king-size with a luxurious en-suite shower room, and one twin. With the comfortable beds, you are guaranteed a good night's rest, but for the night owls, the bedside table lamps are perfect for a spot off late night reading. There is a ground floor family bathroom with a choice of a bath or shower. To the outside, the property has access to a peaceful, secluded country cottage garden with a patio area and table and chairs. Off-road parking is available.
Glencaple is ideally placed for enjoying the fabulous local countryside, with many riverside nature walks straight from the doorstep. Nearby Caerlaverock is home to the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust bird sanctuary and, if birds are your thing, slightly further down the coast is Mersehead rspb reserve, which boasts a number of wildlife hides, the occasional otter, beautiful beach walks and a visitors centre. Both reserves are well worth a visit, as well as the sandy beaches of Portling, Sandyhills, Southerness and Powillimount, especially if you have a dog in tow. Other activities in the area include mountain biking at Dalbeattie (as well as Forest of Ae and Kirroughtree if you wish to explore slightly further afield,) and walking, with the newly laid path up Criffel (the highest hill in the area) proving very popular. If you prefer a slightly slower pace, a short walk will bring you to Glencaple Pier, where you can sit peacefully and watch the boats coming and going, possible fuelled by Afternoon Tea from The Boathouse, Quayside.
Dumfries, with its Museum, has the world's oldest working Camera Obscura, and Moat Brae, inspiration behind the children's classic Peter Pan by J M Barrie. Recently renovated and opened to the public the house is a museum and national centre for children's literature, with an educational discovery garden featuring a tea room and art installations. For a taste of history, venture towards Caerlaverock Castle, a moated triangular castle, which was first built in the 13th century and is classed as one of Scotland's great medieval castles, with an impressive twin-towered gatehouse and moat. There is also the impressive Sweetheart Abbey just across the estuary at New Abbey. Alternatively, why not take a trip up the Nith Valley to discover Ellisland Farm, which was worked by Scotland's Baird, Rabbie Burns, or explore local contemporary art culture with a trip to the Crawick Multiverse, recently created by landscape architect and theorist Charles Jencks.
Jocks Hoose is equally ideal for a couple or small family who don't wish to venture too far from where they are staying. Not only do The Boathouse serve Afternoon Tea, but a bistro style menu is also available up until 4pm. Priding themselves on fresh, local, seasonal produce whenever possible and specialising in vegetarian, vegan, and allergy-specific dietary requirements, it's a great option for the whole family. If tasty pub grub is what you prefer however, The Nith Hotel serve award winning bar meals, with a take away option in place.
Jocks Hoose is let weekly Saturday - Saturday, short breaks welcome between November and Easter excluding February Half Term holiday.

Jock's Hoose is in a superb location. The house is very comfortable clean, tidy and well decorated. It is near to Dumfries town centre and all the amenities but far enough away to be 'in the country. We had a very nice stay.

Warm and well equipped cottage, but on arrival we found the beds not made and the linen in a crumpled heap. Everything else worked well.

Beautiful cottage, immaculately clean and well furnished. The garden was paradise for my dog and fully enclosed.
