On the edge of Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, this traditional single storey cottage is situated on an upland farm, in a superb hillside position, with panoramic views over the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area to the sea and islands beyond. The historic town of Gatehouse of Fleet is just a 5 minute drive, whilst Artist Town Kirkcudbright is 20 minutes.
On the edge of Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, this traditional single storey cottage is situated on an upland farm, in a superb hillside position, with panoramic views over the Fleet Valley National Scenic Area to the sea and islands beyond.
It is a simply wonderful location for a peaceful family holiday, offering seclusion, but not total isolation, with under 10 minutes away by car the picturesque town of Gatehouse of Fleet providing hotels, restaurants, shops, a delightful and testing nine hole golf course, tennis courts, river and loch fishing and numerous other nearby attractions and activities for both adults and children. With a patio for barbecues and alfresco dining, and a fully enclosed and south facing garden, pets are welcome.
Sandy beaches and rocky coves for bathing, windsurfing and sailing are within easy driving distance; sea fishing and horse riding are also available; the Forestry Commission 7Stanes mountain biking trail at Kirroughtree is around 30 minutes' drive away; and the area is a haven for wildlife, with regular sightings of deer, red squirrels, red kites, grouse, barn owls, curlews and, in November 2022, for the first time, a golden eagle (see gallery photo). From the cottage door there are extensive walks and mountain bike rides over hill, past lochs, through forestry and down the valley; Cream o'Galloway and the Cocoa Bean Chocolate factory are all under 20 minutes' drive away; whilst Kirkcudbright Artists' Town, Castle Douglas Food Town and Wigtown Book Town are just 25, 30 and 45 minutes' drive away respectively.
The Cottage is also perfect for bracing winter holidays where its warmth and comfort provide a cosy refuge for very attractive breaks at low season rates.

An excellent cottage set in a lovely location. It is well equipped with everything that is needed for a good holiday. The garden is large and totally enclosed. Ideal for dogs, ours loved it. We had problems over the Wi-Fi connection for the first couple of days but the owners were in regular contact with us until the issue was resolved. This was very reassuring and contact with them was good and friendly. There are plenty of places close to the cottage for walking if that is what you like to do. We would recommend this place to anyone who is looking for a peaceful break.

Laghead Cottage is clean, comfortable and well equipped with quality fittings. If you value peace and quiet and the value of getting a good nights sleep you will enjoy staying here. If the weather is fine you will appreciate the glorious countryside that the surrounds the cottage. One slight negative is that the property is reached along a very narrow road which needs to be negotiated carefully. Apart from this everything was just fine.

We've just spent a week at this cottage (3rd to 10th August 2024), a family of 6 with 2 dogs and would highly recommend this. Kevin & Kate, the owners were an absolute pleasure to deal with. They gave us all the information we needed prior to arrival, including tips on where to visit and things to do. They also kept in touch during our stay to make sure everything was ok for us. Fortunately, as we reluctantly left on the Saturday morning we happened to bump into them. A lovely couple. The cottage was immaculate and catered for all our needs. We reported a possible wasps nest to the owners who promptly dealt with that after our departure. We cannot fault this cottage at all. The gardens were beautiful with absolutely amazing views down the valley to the coast. Not forgetting the beautiful wildlife when you open the curtains first thing of a morning. The nearby farmer, Graham & family were lovely & friendly with occasional chats and lovely views of him with his 2 dogs rounding his sheep up in the hills. We will definitely be booking to go again next year but will be a little earlier as we just missed the annual week long festivities in the local village of Gatehouse of Fleet.
