Turret Cottage is praised for its spaciousness, comfortable beds, and quiet location. Guests appreciate the proximity to the beach and local amenities, including a cafe and live music. While some guests experienced issues with heating and water pressure, the prompt response to maintenance requests and the helpfulness of the staff are noted. The property's charm and the convenience of nearby transport to Edinburgh are also highlighted.
The cottage receives high marks for cleanliness, with multiple reviews mentioning it being 'very clean' and 'tidy'. No negative comments about cleanliness were noted.
The location is highly regarded for its proximity to the beach, local pubs, and ease of access to Edinburgh. The scenic views and the John Muir Way add to the appeal. Some concerns about parking and noise from a private function slightly affect the score.
Comfort is generally well-received, with several reviews highlighting comfortable beds and a cosy atmosphere. However, some guests found the seating and beds in the twin room less comfortable, and there were comments about the property being cold at times.
Facilities are adequate, with a well-equipped kitchen and prompt maintenance service. However, issues with water pressure, heating, and the need for better kitchen storage and seating in the lounge are mentioned. The presence of emergency exit lights and the lack of openable windows are also noted.
There is no mention of gifts or special thoughtful touches provided by the hosts in the reviews, so it is not possible to assess this category. Therefore, the score is set to null.
An endearing, traditionally-styled mid-terrace cottage, sitting within the quaint unified town of Cockenzie and Port Seton, Turret Cottage is the perfect property for a couple or small family looking to be close to Edinburgh, East Lothian's golf courses and the charming towns of Scotland's East Coast. Offering a homely base from which to create everlasting memories with your loved ones, there's no better place to celebrate any special occasion. Head in through the hallway from the ancient cobbled courtyard where you can park. Along the corridor and up a few steps you will find the sitting room, where a door leads out onto a small patio. Settle down on the sitting room sofa and unwind in the evening in front of the TV with an electric fire for additional heating, soaking up your surroundings of a traditional and regally-themed interior. The sitting room looks out on to the listed gardens of Cockenzie House and the trees where Bonnie Prince Charlie's soldiers ate from after the Battle of Prestonpans. Along the corridor, still on the ground floor, there is a spacious twin bedroom again looking out on to the gardens. Next door is the modest kitchen/diner decorated in neutral hues, this room holds every essential for your dining requirements including an electric oven and hob, microwave and fridge, along with a washing machine. Also on this floor is the bathroom where you can indulge in a relaxing soak after a day of adventure before snuggling up in bed. On the first floor sits the double bedroom, also looking out onto the listed gardens, and perfect for the couple in the group with its own en-suite shower room. Spend your mornings sitting out on the patio with your morning coffee in hand, or spend time playing with the little ones on the lawn and under the ancient apple trees before heading out to explore your surroundings.
The property benefits from sitting within the complex of Cockenzie House and Gardens, dating back to the 17th Century with its ancient trees, Victorian follies and rich heritage. There is a café on site offering speciality coffee, full breakfast, lunch and a selection of cakes. The John Muir way is literally a 30 second walk away, you join it at the 'Boat Shore' as it is known locally, which was the original natural harbour for the village. This is a fantastic place to enjoy some of the most beautiful sunsets. Cockenzie House & Gardens is a community hub so check out the Facebook page or ask the Housekeeper – there is often a fair or market taking place in the grounds. Check out the gift shop, too! To the West, you can find Scotland's capital of Edinburgh, offering shopping experiences like no other, astounding architecture, museums and plenty of bars and eateries to indulge in, not to mention the unmissable Edinburgh Castle and Royal Mile; promising excitement for all of the family. If you don't wish to drive, there is regular bus service which takes you into the centre of the city within the hour. To the East, a drive along the coast will take you past Gosford House (a great place for a walk), and through the enchanting villages of Aberlady and Gullane. We were very comfortable there and would happily stay there again. We had one slight problem with the downstairs toilet that was fixed very quickly. Local amenities are within 5 - 10 minutes walk. The view over the Firth is lovely. There is a train station 2 miles away at Prestonpans, from where it is a 14 minute ride to the centre of Edinburgh. Highly recommended.

Sorry about the confusion with the cooker. You need to use it in conjunction with the timer. We would recommend the tour of the house and gardens. Great for getting into the city of Edinburgh. As discussed some information in the welcome pack regarding the best park and ride with a postcode and directions for getting a bus would be a big help as they arenât as easy to navigate as other cities but appreciate that is not Cockenzie Hoise & Gardensâ issue. Chinese is great if you donât want to cook and the cafe is well worth a visit. A lovely coastal walk nearby too. Already discussing about the possibility of coming back next year. Thank you Julie and David

The only downside was that the beds in the twin room were not very comfortable (mattresses were too soft).
