Fuchsia Cottage is a charming retreat in Fortrose, Highland, next to the beach and historic Thomas Telford Harbour. It is built in the traditional one-and-a-half-story Scottish style (c1800 or before) of stone. The cottage is subject to conservation regulations, as are the adjoining gable end walls of the original "Smithy," which now form a secluded garden at the rear. With a southerly aspect and views of the bustling sailing club slipway, this delightful cottage offers off-road parking for two cars and provides the perfect family getaway. You can feel the charm of this traditional Scottish stone cottage from the outside; the green lawn, pretty flowers and red door welcome you. Upon entering, you will be greeted by an inviting sitting room, complete with leather sofas to curl up on, a TV and in the winter a warming woodburning stove. The cottage also has a well-equipped kitchen, perfect for preparing meals for the dining room, which comfortably seats four. When the day draws to a close, retire upstairs to one of the two welcoming bedrooms, comprising a double and a twin. Serving the bedrooms is a bathroom fitted with a bath and an overhead shower, where you can enjoy a relaxing soak after a day of exploration. Step outside to the enclosed rear garden, where you can unwind on the lawn or enjoy alfresco dining on the outdoor furniture in the front garden, making the most of the serene surroundings. The local village of Fortrose is one of the oldest, prettiest and sunniest towns in the north, with the 13th century Cathedral ruins at its heart. The "Black Isle" is noted for its milder climate. Take a walk to Chanonry Lighthouse and the famous Bottle Nose Dolphins close-up viewing area and enjoy the fresh air as you take in the views, you may even spot some grey seals. Further afield, delve into history at the sombre Culloden Battlefield, exploring the site of the last battle fought on British soil and paying your respects at the memorial and visitor centre. Fort George, a still-functioning 1700s garrison fort, is a must-visit; with an impressive artillery fortification and splendid harbour views, it’s great for history enthusiasts. Afterwards, consider a visit to the award-winning IV 10 Restaurant close by or the “Crofters” in nearby Rosemarkie, these inviting eateries serve delightful local fare in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. There is also the Golf Club Restaurant nearby, which has a takeaway menu. No matter how you plan to spend your days, return to the quiet comfort of Fuchsia Cottage to recharge and recount the day's adventures. Your perfect Scottish getaway begins here.
Nestling at the south-west end of Loch Ness, Fort Augustus has a variety of shops, and you can sample a fine selection of food in the local pubs and restaurants. Ideal for those who like to be near water, the village is home to a stretch of the Caledonian canal, including a flight of locks that provide a fascinating place to watch the world go by, as the numerous boats make their way further west towards Fort William. Visit the Clansman Centre, search the Loch for "Nessie" or venture further afield to Newtonmore (Monarch of the Glen country), Kingussie or the city of Inverness. Outside of the village, there is a wealth of natural beauty to discover on foot or by bicycle, along with an abundance of lochs to explore, including Loch Lochy, Loch Garry, and Loch Loyne.
