Head over to the garden area where a table and chairs will be the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea. The wilderness and wildlife of South Uist are simply breath-taking, and so it is no wonder that this holiday cottage is perfect for families who love wildlife and the fresh air of the countryside. The birdlife is stunning, with the occasional rarer migrant passing through, and includes the beautiful redshank, golden plovers, short-eared owls and corncrakes as well as otters and seals basking in the bays. Close to the cottage you will find sandy beaches perfect for kayaking, wild swimming and beachcombing as well as many walks, hikes and cycle tracks for you to explore, and you can head over to the nearby town of Daliburgh where you will find a bar, restaurant, small shops and eateries including local fish and chips, craft and produce or you can take a day trip over to a selection of islands including Mingulay where you will see nesting gannets in the spring, or the isle of Barra, where you can follow the ‘food trail’ through to North Uist. With such a beautiful landscape, bursting with wildlife and outdoor activities, your stay at Kelp Cottage is bound to be one you and your family will love. The islands can be reached by flights from Edinburgh, Glasgow or Inverness; or by ferry from Uig on Skye to Lochmaddy, or Oban to Lochboisdale.

Daliburgh is a town on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides and is known for being a crofting town. There is a memorial here to commemorate the life and works of Donald Allan MacDonald, a Gaelic poet who lived in Daliburgh in the mid 20th century. It is a great base from which to explore a fantastic selection of activities from fishing and walking to diving and birdwatching. The nearby Askernish Golf Course is always popular and was originally designed by ‘Old’ Tom Morris and is popular with golfers keen to test themselves on this challenging course. Dining options include fish and chips from the Burnside Chip Shop or for something a little more fancy dine in at the Borrodale Hotel. While you are in Daliburgh you can stock up on supplies at the supermarket and there is also a number of other shops including gifts shops. A short distance from Daliburgh is the fascinating Kildonan Museum and the birthplace of Flora MacDonald as well as a host of fabulous beaches just waiting to be discovered.
