The name Tarbert, which means "isthmus" or "crossing place" in Gaelic, refers to the fact that it connects south Harris to north Harris and the Isle of Lewis. Tarbert is the principal town on the Isle of Harris. It is well-known for being the Harris ferry port and has a lovely setting with towering mountains providing a dramatic backdrop to the town. The Harris Hotel, the Pierhouse Café and Restaurant, and Island Bites are some of the dining establishments there. It is also home to a number of stores, including Harris Tweed & Knitwear.
