The hilltop town of Ruthin lies further north, where you will be spoilt for choice by the selection of places to eat and drink, accompanied by historical buildings, home to a range of independent shops, awaiting to be explored. Take a day trip to the nearby town of Llangollen, home to astonishing range of amenities to suit all tastes and things to do, including strolling down the Victorian Promenade or explore the World Heritage Site along eleven miles of canal from Gledrid to the Horseshoe Falls via the spectacular Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. Other attractions within the town includes, taking a leisurely steam train ride, a ride on the horse-drawn canal boats or hiking up to the remains of Castell Dinas Brân, which overlooks the town. Keen walkers can explore part of the Offa’s Dyke Path, the Clwydian Range with the highest point being Moel Famau or travel further afield to the Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park and hike up the highest mountain in Wales. Other attractions within the area include the National Trust property of Erddig in Wrexham, One Planet Adventure in Llandegla for those with two-wheels and the historic city of Chester with its famous racecourse and zoo. The small village of Pwllglas lies four miles south of the hilltop town of Ruthin, which lies to the north of Llangollen via the breathtaking Horseshoe Pass. Within the village you will find a small shop with a quaint cafe, perfect for enjoying a coffee and cake before exploring the surrounding area which includes a nearby butterfly conservation area and an old fort. Within Ruthin, you will find a larger selection of amenities and on its doorstep is Lake Brenig, Moel Famau, Loggerheads Country Park and Clocaenog Forest.
