Morfa Lodge in Porthmadog is a characterful property with a blend of historic charm and modern amenities. Guests appreciate its spaciousness, stunning views, and proximity to local attractions. The lodge's unique features and private, yet central location are frequently praised. While some guests mention the lack of Wi-Fi and a dishwasher, the overall experience is positive, with many expressing a desire to return.
Most guests found Morfa Lodge to be very clean, with only a few mentioning areas where dust and some kitchen items were not as clean as expected. The general consensus is that the property is well-maintained.
The location is highly praised for its privacy, scenic views, and easy access to local shops, restaurants, and attractions. Its proximity to Snowdonia and other scenic spots is a highlight, although the hillside position may challenge those with mobility issues.
Guests find the lodge comfortable, with special mentions of the beds and multiple lounging areas. The spaciousness and quietness contribute to the comfort, though some guests suggest improvements to seating and mattresses.
The property is well-equipped, but several guests noted the absence of a dishwasher and Wi-Fi as drawbacks. The modern kitchen and showers receive positive comments, but some guests feel that certain facilities could be updated for an enhanced stay.
While some guests mention a welcome gift, there are not enough references to consistently assess the level of thoughtfulness across all reviews. Therefore, it cannot be guaranteed that such gestures are a standard practice.
When you enter this charming and quirky holiday cottage it is just like stepping back in time! Built in the early 1800s by William Maddox, founder of Porthmadog, Morfa Lodge was originally the old coach house and stable block for the nearby manor house. With antique furniture (the dresser with intricate carvings in the sitting room are believed to be a dowry from 1806) and stunning woodwork, all hand built by the owner's father, a master carpenter, you will feel truly immersed in history.
The bright and sunny contemporary style kitchen/diner has views over the harbour and mountains beyond. There are white modern kitchen units with a microwave, electric hob and eye level oven.
The large sitting room has sofas, a flatscreen TV, dvd and video player, and a stone inglenook fireplace with electric fire. There is even a piano and a lovely leaded window to sit by and look out at the pretty flowers.
There is a ground floor single bedroom and a shower room with loo and wash hand basin.
Upstairs there are another two comfy bedrooms. One with a double bed and a decorative Juliet balcony overlooking the town's rooftops to the mountains in the distance. The second bedroom is larger, and has a double bed, and a single bed in the same room. This also has a decorative Juliet balcony over the cottage gardens, and lovely old oak beams galore.
Feather pillows are provided (these can be swapped for synthetic pillows if requested at the time of booking).
The family bathroom has a loo, wash hand basin and bath with shower over.
There is a sweet little reading area on the landing on the first floor, with an easy chair and lamp. The antique cabinet is filled with a selection of books and games for some quiet time.
Located in a peaceful setting, there is a lawned, private garden (not enclosed) with garden furniture. There is a parking area for two to three cars.
This is an old property, with wobbly walls and bags of character. It may not suit people who enjoy the clean lines of modern properties. However, if you are looking for character, old and interesting then this is just the house for you! Just a five-minute walk from Porthmadog's harbour and bustling town with a selection of shops, restaurants, pubs and the Welsh Highland Railway, you will find plenty to do and see, whatever the weather!
The bustling harbour town of Porthmadog lies on the Glaslyn Estuary and enjoys a stunning setting. The gateway to the Snowdonia National Park, Porthmadog is full of individual shops and restaurants, and home to the Ffestiniog Railway, where you can travel by steam through spectacular Snowdonia scenery, to Blaenau Ffestiniog. The pretty village of Borth Y Gest, with its cliffs and coves, is a short walk or drive from the town. The well known and unique Italianate village of Portmeirion is just down the coast. Situated on a rugged clifftop on its own private peninsula, Portmeirion, famous as the location of the TV show The Prisoner and the final episode of Cold Feet, is surrounded by miles of sandy beaches and woodlands. The area also boasts castles at Criccieth and Harlech, and superb unspoilt beaches such as Black Rock Sands, where the sands stretch as far as the eye can see. We appreciated that it was quietly situated yet easy access to the town. It was a real pleasure to wake up and see the mountains in the morning. A truly spectacular part of the country and we hope to visit again.
