Whilst in town, stop by the former site of Rhayader Castle, embark on a scenic amble along the Waun Capel Wildlife Walk, a serene trail that runs adjacent to the crisp waters of the River Wye. Gilfach Nature Reserve is just 3 miles away a short drive or scenic walk. The lane at the end of the drive is part of the Wye Valley walk (which stretches some 136miles). You are a mere 5 miles to the famous heart of Wales Elan Valley with six dams, reservoirs, wooded walks, visitor centre, cycle hire and more. If you want to make a day of it, head south to the magnificent Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, where you can discover the National Showcaves Centre for Wales, the breathtaking Henrhyd Falls, Craig-y-Nos Country Park and the National Trust Pont ar Daf, from where you can begin your ascent to the wonderful peak of Pen Y Fan. Rhayader is a small Welsh market town with a selection of tea rooms, pubs, restaurants, amenities and unique little boutiques, including local antiques. An added bonus of a leisure centre with a large swimming pool and a weekly livestock market. The Red Kite Feeding Station, on the outskirts of the town is a great attraction not to be missed. Rhayader is the first town on the River Wye and is home to the spectacular dams and reservoirs of the Elan and Claerwen Valleys. The Elan Valley offers a variety of walks and cycle trails (cycle hire is available in Rhayader), as well as a visitor’s centre with café and children's play area. This area is known as the Wildlife Centre of Wales, with its amazing variety of nature reserves open for visitors to enjoy. There is also pony trekking available in the area. Visit Builth Wells, where the Spring Festival, Royal Welsh Agricultural Show and Winter Fair are all held annually. Alternatively, a scenic drive will take you to the Welsh coast 34 miles away.
