What our customers say about their holidays

A lovely place for a get away for the week. It was a quiet location which was lovely, hardly any mobile signal but ok if you have WIFI calling enabled and access within the cottage itself. Triton is very well specced and had everything that we needed for our stay and the welcome gift box was a nice touch. The cookies were lovely! Entry is via a key lockbox on the outside of the building but as it's exposed to the elements, getting into it could be an issue for anyone who has issues with thier hands as it gets a little stiff at times. As others have said, the road down to the cottage is single track with few passing places from the village of Mortehoe, but we didn't have any issues navigating it, even in the dark. The views are fantastic and even greater sunsets. I would recommend the trail out to the right of the road which heads on the SW coast path to Rockam Beech. We tried the Ship Aground pub in Mortehoe for a local meal and it was really nice but beware that the only parking is the pay and display which is a few minutes walk away. The car park also has a small but informative museum at the far end as well as public toilets. Mortehoe is a 5 minute drive from Woolacombe which is ok but if you want more shopping I would suggest a trip to Barnstaple which is about 30m drive away. Combe Martin is a 20m drive away to visit the wildlife and dinosaur park. It has a great soft play area for little ones. Just note it has a steep car park. We did have a few issues regarding the boiler & TV service. These were resolved part way through our holiday. The boiler engineer who came out already had photos of the problem which means it was a known issue prior to our arrival, which wasn't acceptable. We used kettle for hand washing and had little heating for the first few days as Rural retreats were closed for the bank holiday. We managed to get access to one of the other cottages after a few days for showers until ithe boiler was fixed. To be fair, we were offered an exchange to the top bungalow after a few days but for us, it wasn't as nice as where we were stopping, so we stayed put until it was fixed. The lady, Lisa was very apologetic and helpful and did what she could for us so thank you. We knocked 1 star off the review because of the issues faced but we would like to return at a future date to give them chance to get 5/5. Overall, I would recommend.

The cottage was beautiful both inside and out. It was lovely and warm and welcoming. It was so quiet!. The only time I was woken up was by an owl hooting nearby. The garden is beautiful and tranquil. Sheena and Rod were most welcoming and are fabulous hosts. They are not intrusive and are extremely helpful in advising on local amenities and where they recommend to visit. Our dog Mylo was also made welcome with some dog chews which was a lovely touch, as was the cream tea when we arrived. The cottage was spotless, the bed HUGE and the bathroom beautifully appointed. We have stayed on a self catering basis all over the world and have always been disappointed with the lack of equipment. Not the case at Thyme… from foil to freezer bags, spatulas galore to toast racks, the place had everything we have in our kitchen at home. They have thought of everything!! We used Thyme as a base to visit the beaches to the west (we liked Duck Pool best), the north coast (Westward Ho! has a fabulous beach), we went down into Cornwall even as far as Plymouth and enjoyed many outings to National Trust properties. We thoroughly loved our week at Thyme and would highly recommend it both as a place to relax and a base from which to explore the beautiful southwest.

What a delightful cottage! And so easy to book online! Great aspect and we didn't mind the short walk to the church car park - we visited the church before leaving: Recommended. Had the best of both worlds as the cottage is low ceilings and timber beams, crooked walls and floors, not one stair matches another, all very quaint, whilst the kitchen is new and full of mod-cons. Plenty of lovely fluffy towels of varying sizes; lots of kitchen tea towels (and a pinny!). We all found the beds comfy, and slept really well. The little garden was perfect for our dog, contained her yet permitted a little nosy at the neighbours in the driveway behind. I was quite happy sitting there in the morning sun with my dog and a cuppa whilst the teenagers did what teenagers do: wasted the morning sleeping! We found the cottage well placed to visit the North Devon beaches and coastal towns, non of which were too far away. The narrow roads were interesting and we seemed to have no problems despite visiting during the height of the season. We love it! It took no time to feel like home. Thank you for having us. Vicky, Mum, 3 teens and a dog.

Stunning location for a laid back week of walking and watching the sea - truly beautiful. The property itself is stunning and sparkling clean. In 20 years of self catering holidays around the UK I can honestly say this was the most impressive from a cleanliness view. Lisa who looks after the property deserves recognition for her work - just spotless. I have also been impressed by the customer service both from Rural Retreats and Lisa locally. When I left a message during our stay to advise Lisa that there had been some storm damage to an adjacent property she called back quickly and this was followed up with a call within the hour from Rural Retreats themselves. The Welcome Pack - was full of treats from a bottle of wine to cheese and crackers - very much appreciated. Yes - the wifi is slow but we were expecting that having read the brief and enjoyed the break from being 'always available'. There is a landline in the property and we gave family the number so they could contact us if they needed which worked really well. I have no complaints and can thoroughly recommend.

Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful cottage. It was so lovely and peaceful here. Watching all the different birds out the kitchen window and seeing the squirrels was lovely. The cottage is so lovely and everything in it, for you to use was great. The Hot tub was a bonus, lovely and relaxing. The robes and slippers where a lovely touch. Excellent thought out, and nothing was a problem. Rod and Sheena and their daughter were lovely and lovely chatting to them, about the area. We visited the Westleigh Inn for an evening meal, well worth a visit, the food was amazing and the staff very friendly and chatty. We visited, Clovelly, Hartland Quay, Dartington Crystal making and Bude. All of the places were lovely to visit and we enjoyed. Would recommend to friends and we loved our stay here so relaxing. PS The scones and clotted cream was also a nice touch.
