Could you tell me when Sykes last visited this property for yous to claim it is a 4 star property.
Out of coutesy i emailed the landlord before I replied to your request for a review. My contact number is This is the Email i have sent to the landlord 5 days ago without response. Arriving at the cottage we came into a lovely spacious and comfortable first floor . The small lobby had a dog bowl and towels that was very pleasing for our dog Poppy. The kitchen was spotless with all the updated mod cons anyone could wish for. A bottle of red wine from the owners was a lovely touch. A nice dining table to eat from was also amust. Entering the spacious spottless sitting room found a very comfortable area where you could sit and relax with TV and internet connection which was excellent. However it goes very quickly downhill when going downstairs to the Bedrooms and Bathrooms. Your senses were blasted by lots of plug in airfreshners, reed defusers and random smellies and a plethara of disposable moisture de humiders. Unfortunitly this could not come close to masking the smell of damp. Undetered we ventured downstairs to find nice beds and bedrooms and well appointed spotless bathrooms and shower. Together with lovely clean fresh towels. Trying not to let the smell of damp spoil things we went for a walk and a bite to eat which was more than pleasant. The next morning found the sheets feeling dampish and the overwheming stench of damp. After 2 days our clothes in the wardrobes and the drawers smelt damp and mouldy thus we brought our clothes upstairs and put them all on the kitchen table. We tried another night in bed but the smell of damp became too overwhelming. We managed another night on the sofa but we had enough on the Tuesday morning and we returned home instead of coming home on the Friday which we had paid for.

We were quite amused and bemused by the 'Welcome Pack'. This consisted of a small cardboard box holding a J-cloth, plastic rubbish bag, small scourer, miniature container of washing up liquid, 3 dishwasher tablets and 3 plastic sachets of laundry soap {of which there were plenty already under the sink}. In all our previous holiday cottages the welcome packs were geared to the guests rather than cleaning up! There was a basket with tea, coffee and sugar sachets, and some small biscuits, plus 5 miniature bottles of milk in the fridge which was fine. In spite of the folder saying there would be, there was no initial supply of logs for the woodburner. Fortunately the extra boost function on the central heating made the cooler evenings more comfortable. On the website mention was made of the back garden backing on to surrounding fields - you could just about see one part of one field. Secondly, mention was also made of the chairs and table at the front of the property which would make a lovely place to sit - only if you were prepared to put up with the extremely noisy water treatment plant next to you which operated 24 hours a day. We're afraid that these two descriptions are reminiscent of estate agent speak when describing the property.

Wow! What a place to stay. We loved the barn and the field which is more like a private moor! We wanted for nothing in the house…so well stocked with kitchen supplies, equipment and cleaning things. I loved the well stocked book case in the lounge and the kids loved the games. The dog loved the field and spent many a happy hour wandering the perimeters. You get very used to the drive down, up and around the one track road….we rarely met any other cars and the remoteness added to the whole holiday. Weather was rubbish but we didn’t care. Had done great lunches in Hawes, Reeth, West Witton and Richmond….and all very friendly. We will be back!

Ballowfield Barn is always immaculately presented and is a real home from home. The setup has been well thought out and it’s clear that the owners have put a lot of thought into what people need for their stay. This is one of the few places where we haven’t thought ‘oh they don’t have X’. We’ve stayed here three times so far and this definitely won’t be our last time visiting either. The whole area is beautiful and there are so many things on the doorstep of the cottage and even more within an hour or twos drive. This is only 1.5 hours from where we live but we genuinely feel like we’re in a whole other world when we visit.

This property was amazing, would highly recommend, we had such a lovely stay. Big, clean, tidy, well equipped. lovely welcome gifts, for us and the dog. Great location for a base to explore the area. Owner very helpful and responded immediately to questions. Getting in and out of the driveway was a bit tricky as right on the road on a corner and have to reverse in, but you can also park just passed it by the road, which is where we parked the car we took out each day with the other safely in the drive. Local area is lovely, ate in several local pubs and all staff were lovely and really helpful with good food.
