What our customers say about their holidays

Galena is a lovely old cottage in beautiful rural surroundings, very well modernised, with three huge and comfortable beds in the two en suite bedrooms and third bedroom with bathroom two steps away.
It's secret extra ingredient is in the micro details the owners have deployed - almost every little nice-to-have extra thing you wish you had in other good cottages is actually already in place in Galena. This ranges from kit to make young kids comfy to kit for your dogs, and adult tools. For example really good kitchen equipment, from a range of good oven trays and saucepans, kitchen knives that are actually sharp, a coffee pod machine, right down to small wooden tongs with which to pick toast out of the toaster and little plastic bag clips. Throw in an efficient log burner, with a good supply of logs to make the living room toasty, and it's a real home from home. The views from the kitchen and bedrooms are spectacular green vistas of fields, farms, dry stone walls and distant hills, while the cottage is surrounded by amazing Peak District heights, view points, roadside rivers and plunging valleys. There's no shortage of good pubs and cafes within a very few minutes' drive. But what I enjoyed most in our stay at the end of March was the magnificent tree blossoming right outside the back kitchen window, full of songbirds from blackbirds to so many beautiful little blue tits, goldfinches and others, filling the air with their music. ...and the sheep! You can't miss the sheep grazing peacefully on the slope just above the kitchen window, a few feet behind the cottage's dry stone garden wall, as you graze on your own breakfast. My wife and I and two other couples of very old friends have been hiring lovely cottages together for an annual break for about 15 years, not to mention family holidays, so have plenty of experience. We all agreed Galena Cottage was one of the very best.

V lovely couple who run the farm.
They are obviously working very hard on their farm. However, they weren't very happy with me contacting them as regularly as I needed to for help with the problems we had. The farm smell was overwhelming as we're very close to the cow sheds. We needed help immediately because if the wind blows the wrong way the smell of the sess pit comes into the bathrooms. 1 table cloth made eating at the table difficult for 4 days as it couldn't be wiped down. The actual table is incredibly sticky, needs sanding and re varnishing. I asked for some spare table cloths and got 1 extra, so I ended up washing them and eventually went and bought my own. One of the farm dogs paid visits to our back door and barked at our dog, driving her crazy inside the cottage. Another night, she also barked at us outside, off lead. This meant I called the owners again and was reminded they get up early to milk and we'd awaken them. A different farm dog poo'd right outside our front door. One of the chairs at the dining table collapsed with me on it. I fell onto the floor and called asking for new chairs. I was simply asked if I could wait until morning. No one asked if I was OK. 2 chairs were dropped outside in the morning. I don't think that's ok. I don't think you work closely with the owners to resolve issues do you? Most of these issues are already published... some of these issues can just be resolved. It is a shame because they seem super nice, have a beautiful spot to share with guests and have a gorgeous working farm.

Galena Cottage is full of character and is a quality holiday letting.
Fixtures and fittings are first rate in a cottage that has been adapted and updated for holiday hire. In addition to the stunning Peak District scenery, there is a lot to do in the local area based on Wardlow; and there is excellent signposting to local attractions and activities in the landlords 'welcome pack' that is e-mailed 2-4 weeks before arrival and supplemented by many flyers in the cottage. There are numerous excellent hostelries within 15-20 minutes driving but the The Stags Heads that is within walking distance comes with 'health warnings' from other local: "the landlord is eccentric and taciturn, make sure you shut the door, they don't 'do' mobile phones and don't ask for lager". We didn't experience any of this because the pub was not open at either lunch time or early evening (1900) on a Thursday, or perhaps they saw us coming and locked the door. Since returning home I've found on the Good Pub Guide, "only open Fri evening and all day weekends". Finally, if you don't love the cottage and enjoy the local area you will be in a very small minority.

We had a good week at Galena Cottage.
The kitchen is well equipped and we appreciated the welcome pack. Good location with walks direct from the house. Itâs well placed for the Monsal Trail and places in and around Buxton. We would recommend asking for an earlier take over time in winter so you can get settled in daylight. The cottage was difficult to find as the cottage sign was unreadable and locating the key box might be difficult in the dark and access tricky. We arrived in minus temperatures and thick snow, and had to dig out the drive to get the cars in. A friendly neighbour lent us a spade as the one in the garage was broken and not up to the job. The house was very cold when we arrived but once the heating was on the cottage apart from the kitchen was warm and cosy. The kitchen radiator did not heat up at all making the kitchen far too cold to sit in for meals initially. Fortunately the maintenance team told us how to solve the issue - by turning off a bedroom radiator. Iâd recommend ringing them if any problems are encountered as Margaret was helpful and friendly.

What an amazing find.
This cottage was homely, exceptionally clean and very comfortable. We were a party of two couples and two singles and this cottage was just perfect for us. the couples had the rooms with ensuite and the singles the large family bathroom. There was so much space that we didn't actually use the snug. The standard of everything was top rate from the bed linen and towels to the cookware and crockery. I can't tell you how pleased we all were to see plenty of large mugs, in fact there was plenty of everything . The welcome pack and toiletries were another nice touch. we were still finding other nice touches on the day we left, there is nothing more we could wish for. We go on this type of holiday every year , the girls go walking/shopping and the boys cycle.( we are all the wrong side of 60, 70 and one 80) We found plenty to do , nice pubs close by , The Anchor in get to top award from us. The cottage has set a very high bench mark for us. We like to try new places but we have all said we would like to return here, maybe have a winter break.
