What our customers say about their holidays

    For dog owners.

The owners live next door and this is obviously a brand new lodge. Everything is sparkling and new and instructions clear as to the eco system but we are in a forest and we do have dogs with us so were very very respectful of the facilities and high end spec. But the lodge veranda could do with a gate. We placed a small bench across it as a visual barrier to our dogs so they did not explore the grounds. We walked them off site and kept them on the lead most of the time when “home” as improvements are still being made to the grounds and access with electronic gates installed while we were there. The owners have a blind dog who does wander around and so it is guests responsibility to look out for the home dog who wanders in front of cars. There are signs on site and this is pointed out by the owners. It might have been helpful to alert guests of this in advance as there is effectively no secure garden area for visiting dogs. It is extremely difficult to find properties of this quality and location that permits 2 dogs and we are responsible dog owners and do not let our dogs roam, bark or disturb others privacy but we did not realise there was no secure boundary to our lodge. Fortunately a forest walk is very close by for early morning exercise and toileting. It is also not clear what the house cleaning bond is about. Have we already paid this in the price paid to Sykes? It is not clear at all. If so how is this refunded? ****** Owner Response ***** We are so pleased that you found Heron Lodge to be of such a high standard "sparkling and new". Previous guests at Heron Lodge have all commented how spoilt they felt to enjoy such a peaceful, secluded, quality woodland location with unhindered access to the woodland, yet such close proximity to Inverness. Dog owners especially have commented what a holiday it was for their dogs too! Visiting dogs will now benefit from a gate on the terrace steps - so they can now lie out on the terrace and soak up the sights and smells of the forest unhindered. We encourage Red squirrels, Pine martens, Pheasants and Hedgehogs (amongst other wildlife) to share the 12 acre woodland too. We ask guests to drive slowly through the site, primarily for the safety of other guest's children (who may also be using the woodland access track) and to encourage resident and visiting wildlife. Dog owners are in for a treat here, with fantastic forestry commission walks to explore on their doorstep, and days at the beach just a stone’s throw away!

We had a fantastic time at Moorhen Lodge in North Kessock.

The lodge is beautifully appointed and feels like nothing we have ever stayed in before. The peace and quiet is really quite something, and on a clear night the sky is absolutely stunning. There is a plancha-style gas BBQ on site but as the property is in a protected area, you can't have naked flames indoor or out - so no charcoal BBQs or candles. The parking space outside is a little on the small side, so be sure to practice your five-point turns in advance. The beds are comfortable and the en-suite is lovely too. The wood-stove is a really nice addition and makes the living room nice and warm for when you've had enough of the hot tub. It uses a fair bit of fuel, but we contacted Helen and they can supply net bags for a small charge. We managed to get a Tesco delivery and a local taxi company out to the lodge - it really is in the middle of nowhere - but the directions are fairly simple once you get used to them. The fridge is huge, and there's a dishwasher and washer/dryer there too. The TV and sound-bar are decent and there's a spare HDMI on there for a Chromecast too if you have one. The WiFi is pretty decent in the lodge, but - as expected - there's no mobile signal on EE/O2, so make sure you have one phone in your group that can make use of WiFi Calling. All in all, a beautiful, secluded, peaceful lodge and we absolutely loved it. Looking forward to coming back!

This is a beautiful place to stay.

Helen and David are very welcoming, friendly and have gone to every effort to ensure you have everything you’ll need during your stay - right down to the books on the bookshelf which were a great variety! The welcome pack was such a lovely touch (heather ale yes please!) and lots of clear instructions on how to use everything in the cabin. The envelope of ideas of places to go was also really well received. The cabin was absolutely spotless when we arrived, and I love that the dog friendly aspect is really well thought through - dog bowl outside with poo bags, dog treats in the welcome pack, a special dog poo bin outside and clear rules about what is and isn’t allowed just makes it much easier to manage. The setting is also just stunning. There is so much to explore immediately outside the cabin without having to get in your car. Would recommend Ord Hill and the walk to the local small Loch Lundie. Beautiful and magical! Our other favourite place to visit was Rosemarkie Beach - sandy with clear water but also has rocks to climb, rock pools to investigate and also caves with a very interesting history! We just had such a lovely time staying in Heron Lodge, I would love to return!

This was the best place we have ever stayed & gutted to leave - will definitely return!

A beautiful log cabin with everything you would ever need & immaculately clean. Welcome gift pack & lovely friendly & helpful hosts. We actually sat in the hot tub one night with snow swirling around our heads - my little girl was in awe!? Also enjoyed waking up to the birds & watching them feed - beautiful red squirrel visitor too - wow! We also saw a tiny tree creeper & a woodpecker. The area is amazing - lovely little local walk to the loch through a beautiful glen. Then Glen Affric & the Cairngorms & Fairy Glen (great tiny pub in village) & wonderful drives to amazing scenery - mpuntains, trees, lochs, sea & castles! We really really didn’t want to leave & are very sad to be home apart from to see our cat. Our little dog came with us & loved it too! Amazing holiday - thank you to Helen & David for making it happen! Emma, John, Gracie & Harry me

We had a wonderful New Year at Moorhen Lodge.

It is a wonderful place to escape to. Our giant pup loved the wildlife, walks and beaches. Our kids (10 & 8) loved hunting for Dolphins and lazing in the hot tub (& the WiFi). My husband and I loved the absolute peace and comfort while watching the wide variety of birds from our window. It is a fabulous Lodge, they have thought of everything and were on hand if needed without invading our holiday in any way. We are planning to go back. The lodge is so cosy with all the facilities of home. The beds were comfortable with extra blankets if needed. The extra touches included a real Christmas tree. It was lovely. NB if you plan a New Year break many of the local hotels and restaurants close to recover from the festivities, plenty still available in Inverness though.
