Todd Crag is a well-liked cottage in Ambleside, praised for its beautiful views, peaceful location, and spaciousness. The newly renovated bathrooms and kitchen add to the comfort, and the property is appreciated for being dog-friendly. The garden and views are particular highlights, contributing to a pleasant stay.

Guests that stayed at this property said

The property generally appears to be clean, with no major complaints about cleanliness inside the house. However, there are remarks about the untidy garden, which suggests room for improvement in outdoor maintenance.

The location is highly praised for its tranquillity, proximity to Ambleside, and stunning views. The convenience of parking and access to local attractions is also appreciated, making it a desirable spot for visitors.

Guests find the property comfortable, noting the quality of the new beds and the spaciousness of the rooms. However, some guests mention issues with heating and a lack of additional blankets, which affects the overall comfort level.

The facilities, including the kitchen and bathrooms, are modern and mostly well-received. Nonetheless, guests have reported maintenance issues such as problematic smoke alarms and lighting, and have suggested the need for more kitchenware and clearer instructions for appliances.

There is insufficient information to assess thoughtfulness as it pertains to gifts, as reviews do not consistently mention them. Therefore, while a welcome pack is noted, it cannot be guaranteed and the score is set to null.

About this property

Resting within a residential cul-de-sac, just a scenic walk from the bustling of town centre of Ambleside is this detached bungalow, Todd Crag. Situated in an elevated setting, Todd Crag enjoys views of the fells from all the rear windows and offers an ideal holiday accommodation for either two couples or a family wanting a pleasant base from which to enjoy the best of the Lake District. Arrive at the cottage and park up on the driveway before heading up a few steps to reach the front door. Step inside to discover the spacious L-shaped living room where you can unwind on the sofa in the evening or on a sunny day, slide open the patio doors to reveal the balcony and take in the sweep of the fells around Ambleside and down to Lake Windermere. Try your hand at a spot of home-cooking by making use of the quality appliances within the sleek kitchen, including an electric oven and hob, fridge with freezer compartment and a dishwasher. Delight in the dish at the well-presented dining table, before you pop open a bottle of gin and toast to a magnificent holiday in the Lake District. Catch up on your rest in the master bedroom, complete with light colours, a fitted wardrobe and a king-size double bed, along with a en-suite bathroom so you can have your own privacy while getting prepared for the day. There is also a twin room which has use of the fully tiled family bathroom with bath and shower over. The centre of Ambleside is just a gentle stroll away and offers a wealth of shops, pubs, traditional inns and restaurants to take advantage of, plus an independent cinema which showcases the latest films and live music. For the avid walkers of the group there are plenty of beautiful walks in the area, with some particularly breathtaking routes towards Stock Ghyll Force, a 70 foot waterfall in a wooded area, as well as around the shores of Coniston Water which also offers some of the best mountain biking around. Slightly further afield you can access Hawkshead and Esthwaite Water, along with Bowness-on-Windermere, Windermere and Lakeside, each of which host their own attractions and atmosphere. Todd Crag is an idyllic getaway to one of the UK’s most desirable holiday destinations.

Lying at the northern tip of Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake, Ambleside makes a superb base for touring the central Lakes, with Grasmere and the Langdale Valley just a short drive away. There is plenty to do here - cruises, boat trips and watersports on Lake Windermere itself and numerous shops, restaurants and pubs in the village to suit all tastes. On the lakeside at Waterhead, the parkland offers lovely views down the lake and a short stretch of beach, whilst a walk in the other direction, following Stock Ghyll through woodland, will bring you to the entrancing waterfall of Stock Ghyll Force. Along with the Lake and the great walking on offer, Ambleside is also famous for its annual rushbearing ceremony and the diminutive 17th century “Bridge House” - one of the most photographed buildings in the Lake District and now the National Trust Information Centre.

We shared with another couple and a couple of things would have made the stay even better. As there are new carpets in bedroom /hall , we couldn’t quietly use the toilet without disturbing the other guests as bedrooms are next to each other. Also the en suite bathroom has a couple of issues, the shower tray does not drain correctly , causing it to overflow if more than one shower taken , and the hand basin is quite badly cracked. Overall a great property and would like to return in the future. Great garden for dogs and to enjoy the sunshine .

In the house we noticed on arrival that the dining room table had several water stains and other marks, and that the grill pan had a lot of bunt on marks which we couldn’t remove. The extractor fan in the en-suite bathroom was not working and the sheet for the queen sized bed was too small. In the garden we found that the steps up to the front and back doors were too high, which made it difficult for older people to gain access. The grass had been nicely mown, a number of bushes and shrubs need cutting back to facilitate easy access through the gates. The paving on the patio is uneven and a trip hazard, also the edge of the patio is unprotected from a shear drop of at least a metre. All these things aside we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and would have no hesitation in recommending Todd Crag to others.
